When I purchased my 96 4 dr auto with 81k, the a/c compressor had been removed ( have no way to find out why) and an after market bolt on pully was in its place. I would like to have a/c as here in Philly it can get hot in the summer.I have purchased a new re-built compressor but a mechanic stated that in all likely hood I will have to replace all the components because the system is prob contaminated because the compressor hoses were not blocked allowing contaminents into the system. Is this likely true, what could be done, if anything, to avoid replacing all the system. All opinions would be appreciated.

You will definitely want to replace the accumulator, cycling switch, orifice tube and ALL seals, and at least thoroughly flush the system out before you install your new compressor.  It is still going to be possible that you have problems from contamination in the future though.

what lastcoupe said  and if you do a good job of flushing it i think you will probably be ok.
