AEM air intake follow-up

I bought and installed an AEM Brute Force air intake for my Blazer. It took about 30-45 mintues to install it, if you have the tool right there. If you have to round up your drill and such, then it will of course take longer. After reading many posts and other websites, I settled on AEM because it is a dry air filter. Here are a few pictures in case anyone was interested and hadn't seen an installed AEM set-up.

Looks good. The filter looks a little tight against the washerfluid resiviour though.

how much did it cost you? What performance did you get out of it?

How do you maintain(clean) the filter on that?

It looks alittle tight, but it is a very long filter.

I bought it for about $225 (on sale). The manufacture claims a modest hp and mpg gain, but my factory box was cracked and broken so replacing it with a new one or one from the junkyard just seemed a waste. Why not upgrade? When I replaced it I also changed the plugs and wires (I recently bought the truck) so any gain in performance (there was alot in pick up, and mpg) was a combination of old plugs and wires and the new intake.

And it seems simple to maintain I bought a cleaning kit for less than $10 (two cleanings per kit) and plan to clean it every oil change. It says just use warm water and one of the bottle to wash it then wash with water then dry. And NO OIL it says repeatedly.

Looks the same as mine. Just mine says Fram Boost on it.. Cleaning is simple and easy but I had to get a cheap filter to put on temporary while I waited for the filter to dry. Summit racing sells the filter cleaning kits for 8.00 now. So I'm just going to stock up on it soon.

That's because it is the same kit!  AEM makes Fram's kit for them and uses an AEM dryflow filter.  So for those of you who are contemplating purchasing an AEM kit, save yourself some money and just buy the FRAM version.  You will see no difference between the two.

If you can find a fram for cheaper for sure, buy one. I found an AEM kit for cheaper than I could a fram.

I am thinking about getting a cai, but I am not sure that its worth over 200 bones. Do you think that it was worth it? I already have a k&n drop in, and I saw nothing new with that.

Well like I said it was to replace a broken stock air intake. So is it a mod I would have done otherwise? I probably would have waited until I did any exhaust mods. It did give me a subtle mpg gain and is supposed to up it 8-10 hp.

i  just got lucky and found a K&N Gen II FIPK never used still in the box for 75 bucks from craigslist. installed it yesterday and it works the same as my last one did off my 00 Xtreme. so i threw away the 40 dollar one off of ebay which did absolutly nothing for me

I know that... The Fram kit includes the cleaning kit and tools to install the intake system. I have pics of everything. Just do a search for my old thread Xmas in July.

When you replaced the filter and line did you also need a mass air flow sensor and a throddle body spacer? and When you did the wiring did you change to a higher milimeter grade and higher output coil. im looking to do these to my ls but i want to see what is necessary for immediate fuel economy results and hp gains.

MAF supports in excess of 350HP without problem. 

Throttle body spacer on this motor is not going do much else besides lighten your wallet.

Larger plug wires don't do much else either and a higher output coil...  Well, lets just say if you find one that actually puts out more voltage than the stock coil (test it) and is as reliable, be sure to let the rest of us know.  The coils that are used on these trucks are already pretty darn hot.

good to know... thanks for clearing that up. so basically it efficient to replace the stock intake with a fully closed off system such as illustrated in the images above, get some platnum plugs and 8.5 mm wires. i have already changed to a cherry bomb vortex muffler system but should i go with a superflow cat converter? That should cover the bear necessities for exhaust, intake and fuel managment.

i heard the 8.5 mm wiring allows for a stronger spark... but i would rather hear it from experience. im looking to get better fuel economy and increased hp...

If you can get larger wires for the same price and feel they would work better, go ahead with them.  From an electrical standpoint, there isn't much difference between the stock 7mm wires and 8.5mm wires.  You will likely see a lower resistance per ft, but in the length of wire you are working with, it really doesn't matter much. 

The other aspect that you have to mess with is that the 8.5mm wires will not fit into the stock holders.  If you force them, you will damage them.  And you really should have them in a holder to maintain proper routing to keep them from being damaged during operation.

Does anyone know the part number for the Fram "Boost" Air Intake System, as I can't find the part number on Fram's web site.

ok ill stick with my 7mm wires... i put in the bosch fusion plugs.... nice... just waiting on a few bucks for that intake... know an online site for good price?

I have a 00 Blazer 4.3 I bought a air intake off line and I sent it back because I didn't think it would work. The back bolt or stud in the TB was to long and it seemed to be one piece. How did you guys make this work?

Oh that little guy? I wouldn't worry about that little guy. He is two pieces. I just removed it as one piece. Then I put it in a vice and turned it loose. You only need the lower portion for the new intake, but be sure and not mess any threads up when you put it in a vice.

I got what appears to be identical to theonetrueapex from a place on e-bay for US$44.99 (acekogyo). Of course it cost more to get it to New Zealand than what it cost & then I had to modify the heat shield to suit the RHD Blazer. Sounds good & seems more responsive. I'm still on the same tank of gas, so I need to wait & see if any mileage improvement.
