so they say i blew a "sunshell" in my tranny. it was a very loud disturbing bang that hit under my seat. so between tow, external check 40.00, "rdi" 695.00, sunshell unit 1595.00, torque convertor 299.00, bands seals springs and clutches; they are getting me for 2500.00. i wish i new transmissions, cause now im selling kidneys, blood, gall bladders and whatever else is popular on the market. i just hope im not being robbed; but i had my 84s' rebuilt in 2000 for about 2000.00. so it seems right. but what the hell is a sunshell. obviously it wont allow you out of first w no reverse when its in pieces but what does it really do when its solid. i got only 500 cash and they said they would be done tomorrow. anybody need a kidney, hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, no seriously!

Actually, this is a common thing to have happen. It is the reaction sun shell and it takes out R-2-4.
Here's
Hanr3's experience with the same issue:
4L60E Tranny Rebuild Thread If you can swap out the transmission yourself, get a reman unit from a parts store or online retailer. Another member recently purchased a reman unit from
MonsterTrans.com and told me he was very happy with it last time we talked.
Oh and what the heck is 'rdi'? They are definitely soaking you on the rebuild cost. You can get a GOOD quality reman unit for MUCH cheaper.

That seems pretty high to me too. I'm having my tranny rebuilt from an 88 4.3 truck. New torque/v8 clutches/sunshell/servo, the whole works pretty much. For that to be all done retails at $2200 Cad. Luckily I am only getting charged $1500 for it. That is with me pulling the tranny, so they are only rebuilding it. Still not cheap.

RDI is aamco's way of itemizing the labor seperately. stands for removal dissasemble and install, but i think it stand for retarded dumb idiot tax. yea reman was around 1000-1300 and it is 2200 but with taxx 2500. and thanx for the thread kyle, i would've tackled it myself but i dont have a garage and its been raining forever on the island. so im just taking care of the mind to diminish the pain.
