Dont know who else i could ask a question like this.... so here you go...

My brother has a mid 90's jeep grand cherokee with the 5.2l v8 AWD.  Anyways i need to tow my blazer ('89) about 150 miles.  Can anyone guess whether or not it'll be ok?  It gots a class III hitch I believe...

Thanks Guys

I don't think there should be a problem.

just make sure you put your transfer case as well as tranny in neutral, and you'll be fine

The blazer's gonna be on a 2 wheel dolly..... does it matter if it faces front or back?

i would say fron wheels on the dolly. thats how i did it when i got my blazer. i hear things can get crazy if the back is on the dolly.

Yeah, front wheels on the dolly.  Is your truck 4wd or 2wd?  If only 2wd, then you can tow it with the transmission in neutral, but if 4wd, I would disconnect the driveshaft at the front of the rear diff, tape the u-joint caps in place and bungy it up to the underside of the truck.  Reason being, the lubrication is not good on the rear output shaft when the transfercase is in neutral and can cause premature wear on the transfer case bearings.

Technically your not supposed to tow a 4wd vehicle at all.  Only on a trailer or flatbed but as long as both the tranny and transfer case are in neutral you should be fine.

Why does the transfer case have to be in neutral???

dbleon, I'm not great at describing things so maybe someone can get more technical than i can but the transfer case has to be in nuetral because it can mess up it up while it's being towed because 2 wheels are spinning and the other 2 are not.  I'm not entirely sure thats the reason so anybody feel free to corect me if I am wrong.

As I said, if the transfer case is in neutral, the upper bearings may not be sufficiently lubricated.  It isn't because only two wheels are turning, it is how the transfer case is turning.  It is just easier to take a 10mm wrench, a roll of duct tape, and a bungie cord with you.

For short trips, you shouldn't have any issue if the transfer case is in neutral (transmission in neutral for good measure), but for any extended towing, either flatbed/trailer or disconnect the rear driveshaft.

If you are renting a dolly from Uhaul, just spend the extra $10 and get the flat bed car trailer. I will save you time and will be sure not to screw up your truck. As far as the jeep pulling it, it should be fine, its got a v8 and some decent axles. Just make sure its a class3 or higher hitch and check the tow ratings (from a quick search on edmunds, i found that a 1996 grand cherokee with the 4.0LI6 has a max of 5,000 pounds, which with the blazer and a trailer would be darn near that, so I would say you should be fine).
