Except part of the K&N price is going through the smog testing and certification. You just think there is no difference other than price. If you really want a pic then just google it, and don't make us accessories to fraud.
You'd probably have better luck buying a used OEM filter box.

Will removing the stock air box and just puting on a cone have the same performance effects as a cold air intake kit?
No.
That's not CARB legal, and the tubing is also different. The KN&N tubing is smoother flowing, or something.
And the heat shield is a nice bonus.

Yeah, my concious got the better of me, I bought a boneyard complete OEM airfilter assembly for 100$ and junked my homemade deal, the kicker is that 2 days latter, the k&n people sent me that @#$% CARB sticker!!! Anyways, I wanna do it right and there are so many choices, now logic tells me a closed box that is fed from below through the grill would provide the coolest charge than a simple cone with heat sheild?? Am I barking up the wrong tree? So I am torn between the airaid fully enclosed non-oiled filter that they claim 10 ponies versus the real deal K&N which is oiled (clogs the MAF?) and only partially protected from underhood heat, what is the general consensus? I know everybody has an opinion like we all have a @#%% but surely all the data added up must lean towards one set up versus the other no? My other question was obvious, I am gonna put a flowmaster muffler 40 series or whatever is the proper model but doesnt the pre-cat and full cat still remain a choke point?, I know they have free flow cats but then there still remains that pesky pre-cat as a choke point, say I just add the muffler and maybe use bigger tubing downstream will that improve performance or just sound better? Again logic tells me that the C.A.I, muffler and a aftermarket throttle plate w/out the hump I installed should give me some real life seat in your pants feeling.. Anybody care to help me out? Much appreciated..peace

You'll only have MAF issues if you over oil the K&N... If you have a shop vac you can always give it a pass over get rid of any possible excess oil.
This is always an option as well.
