I use simple green and a hose. Just be careful not to get a solid stream onto the alternator. I usually take a plastic grocery bag and cover the alternator.

Lol I knew it, that is why my alternator died! I thought that was the reason, but people didnt think so. A day after I degreased and washed my engine down the alternator slowly started to die. Until it was officially dead and my battery died and I got stuck on a random road due to this.

Carquest sells a purple cleaner that works well.

Yeah the alternator can be damaged by lots of water. Everything else should be fine. Of course, if you disconnect the battery and then allow everything to thoroughly dry before reconnecting it, you shouldn't have any problem either.

Well you can probably get it at any autoparts store. Just spray it on and leave it on for 5-15 minutes with the engine slightly warm. Be sure to cover your altenator from getting wet, I found this out the hard way. Then just spray it down. If its really dirty use a big plastic fiber type brush that would typically be used for tires or somthing and use that.

Yeah, depending on how dirty your engine is, you may need to scrub, leave it sit, rinse and repeat until you have it the way you want it. You can buy Simple Green pretty much anywhere. Last time I bought it I grabbed a gallon jug of the concentrate and I don't think I'm 1/3 of the way through it yet. And I use it for everything from engine cleaning to putting in with my dirty shop rags.
