Hey all you gurus. I need some help.

We are going to get my son(s), yep both of them, car stereo's for Christmas. Not interested in amps, and sub-woofers, nor all the fancy gadgets on the head unit. I just want a plain jane head unit that will pump out about 40 watts continuous to 4 speakers. Or what brands are leading the market in durability right now. Same with speakers, looking for some plain ajne 3 ways that can hadle 40 continuous. What are your recommendations?

Back in the day, Pioneer was the head unit of choice. Granted back then it came with 8track. Been a while since I went car stereo shopping.

Pioneer is still really good. for what it sounds like you want - i would suggest the Pioneer audio systems packages. they come with a cd player head unit, and four 6.5" speakers. though they may not fit the vehicles. so i say find a decent head from Pioneer and get some matching coax speakers. i will run a quick search to see if i can find some good stuff real quick.

hear is a good one
Pioneer DEH-P3800MP - it does CD/MP3 and is $119 on onlinecarstereo.com
22rms/50 max per channel at for channels.

and here is a link to the Pioneer coax speakers.

Pioneer is good, there have a design flaw in the grounding for the cd player, (I still sell em), JVC are nice. pretty comparable features. If it was up to me, I would buy the entry level Eclipse or Alpine. Kenwood's menus are horrible.

The RMS on any aftermarket cd player is only 19-23 watts. Max is 40-50 depending on unit. check out onlinecarstereo.com or woofersetc.com. Crutchfield.com is also a place that also has reviews on the different cd players.

19-50rms from a headunit!!!!! I understood it was more like 7-12. I will stick up for pioneer, I got mine off my buddy almost 4 years ago, and he ran it for 1, so I will say, at least this model, is very durable........alpine is also good

40-50 watts Peak MAX. The ground plane on Pioneers isn't the best. I love em, and thats the only flaw I can find.

20-25rms seems like a bit much to me......headunits should be cea style too, alpine lists some of their headunits rms, but i dont know if its cea approved

Well, I've tested Pioneer, range is from 18-23 watts. JVC is from 17-20. ALpine is from 16-18.

Has the trend of sub woofers and external amps changed head units that much? Used to be able to get a 40 watter with no problems. Hmmm, what next????

Crutchfield is still around eh. I'll have to do some research.

Keep hitting me up with your suggestions.

I agree with hillbilly about Pioneer and JVC. They are my two top picks for reasonably priced head units.

I'm no stereo guru, but I love my Kenwood head units. They sound great and function perfectly for me. I bought a new one at HHgregg two years ago that has 50 W x 4 MAX and even has a remote control and is serious satellite compatable for $110.00 plus tax!

only problem I have with Kenwood is the menu setup., I sell and install them and I get confused with all the menus
