I must say, that Metro was creative, too.  The last couple pictures have a sign about The Mounds RV area and saw Michigan plates.  Is this the same Mounds that was mentioned in another thread?  And entrance fees?  C'mon, paying to go wheelin'?  Hardly seems right.

Looks like a couple of the vehicles got stuck and got pulled out.  Either way it looks like a blast!

yes in michigan...we try and protect out natural areas...plus buying your off road license and paying entrance fees just goes to make better trails...in the lower penninsula...the atv'ers have all the trails..there isn't a lot of places to just go off road...there are a few places worth paying for..Silver Lake Dunes..and the mounds off road area..they are two of the 4 "scramble" areas to play in..pretty much you get to drive around where ever you want..all the rest are usualy trail systems..also we have to issue that michigan is a huge snowmobile state...so if you get busted wheeling on a snowmobile trail...oh man...that's about the worst offense...there's bitter fighting between the wheelers..and smomobilers...in the Upper Penninsula...the rules are different..there is active logging and mining roads..they change like every day...you can go just about any where you want up there...well except for the snomobile trails...those snow people are crazy mean!! I would gladly pay to go wheeling as I do whith fishing and hunting...the DNR needs the moeny..and it just gets put back into the places you like to go...

Thanks for the explanation Paddle.  I guess I'm just cynical about fees because you have to pay for a badge to get on the beach where I grew up and it never made sense.  Why would I pay to go somewhere that's been there for years and the townships had no part in creating?  I suppose it pays for cleaning crew and lifeguard salaries but there are lots of beaches you don't have to pay to get on.  But I digress...

I'm curious as to what they actually do to make better trails...

Agreed, but I hadn't heard about the snowmobile nazi's. Those logging roads definaely do change and there are lots of screwed up seasonal roads too. Near South Range, MI (da UP) there is a real good offroading area that has no entrance fees and has some knarly stuff that I won't do in my blazer. I would gladly pay a small fee to go offroading especially if there was a place near Appleton, WI to go. It always seems impossible to find places to go that are populated.

I wish there was something like that around here!

I'd have no problem paying a decent fee for some good mudding!

Roadside squeejie!

Heck, I keep a 6" one in the truck for cleaning the mirrors at a gas station, and it works better for cleaning the lights...

I wonder what kind of motor that geo metro has in it, i doubt the stock motor can even turn the wheels, never mind get it out of the mud...

If you draft really close behind a vehicle with a Metro/Firefly, you can break the 75MPG barrier

I reckon so. It may as well be powered by a 660cca 12-volt battery.

kind of similar to what trail maintance does for hiking trails...crews come through...clear out fallen trees...repair wash outs...and work on putting down more trails...also a lot of 4wd er's have trail clean up days...kind of to prove we aren't all terrain tearing up gas guzzling meanies...plus at some of the parks..like Silver Lake..they offer air pumps, bathrooms..and other nice features that aren't necessarily needed...but nice.....(to fill up those tires after riding all day on the whitest sand dunes any where...) I'm all about free fun....but unfortunately there's a lot of groups fighting for a slowly shrinking piece of real estate..

I'd say the guy in the pic is stuck. Pay to play, though. If you've never been stuck, you've never been off roading. I have seen too many truck on these big lifts with giant tire who have never seen even a quarter of the action my stock little s10 will do. One of the giant pavement pounders I understand though, it was a ford, I'd be scared to take it off the pavement too.
