I have to tell you the story about my "free" oil change, I recieved a coupon from the motor club for the oil change, after 2 hrs and a $25 engine clean, $25 air filter and $9 enviroment fee I went out and started my car, I noticed the oil light was on and so I pulled up in front  of the service dept "pull her bay three he said" and I did. The two "mechcanics"  Jethro and Heathclif tried to find out why the light was on while I went back to the waiting room. I looked through the glass and saw they were boosting the car, I thought this was a little strange, then the manager came over and told me "I am sorry sir but your starter is gone "I gasped a little and told him to replace it. "your lucky it happened here and not out on the road somewhere" the manager said, although I really wasn't feeling lucky at all. Another hour passed and and saw them boosting it, and then there 5 guys in a heated discussion, I went over to the manager and asked what was going on  "your engine is seized" , I gasped! he said " one of my guys forgot to put oil in it".
The good news is they are going to replace the engine with a used motor with less miles on it and they gave me a rental car, Although I don't know where this motor came from or how it was taken care of and I am a bit skeptical, if they can't do an oil change how are they going to change a motor.

Anybody who has been through this or anybody with some advice please respond

About the only Canadian Tire mechanics are good for is mounting a tire on to a RIM do NOT let them ever touch ANYTHING on the vehicle itself.

Man, the head mechanic almost didn't sell me tires once, because I only brought the rims in and said what size tire I wanted and he was like "WE NEED TO KNOW THE VEHICLE IT GOES ON!"

The one time I let Crappy Tire work on my car, which was to put a set of 4 on my Z34... They buggered my front wheelbearing...

WAY over torqued... I'm surprised they didn't strip a lug... I was standing on a 3 foot pipe, on a 2 foot long 1/2 inch drive breaker bar... I had to start jumping before I could get the lug nuts loose...

At least your oil change was free! lol.

But don't let them put in a used engine, unless they have proof that it was rebuilt right before they put it in... And see if they'll let you get the work done somewhere else and send them an invoice...

First off, I knew as soon as I read free oil change that they were going to hit you for other things, but never thought they would forget oil.

Two, It takes a total of 5-10 minutes max to change the oil on these things, you really should just do it yourself.

Three, don't let them put a used motor in without reciept of rebuild and even then I would be skeptical.  I would prefer they price the motor and install, cut me a check and I would then drop my own motor in.

Oh man, lube shops and chain tire stores.  Ugh.  .

The mechanics sound like they're potheads.  Places like these seem to only hire young adults who gotta make car payments on an '88 Civic and can't pass their ASE exam.  Find a reputable independent shop who specializes on working on vehicles to do all of your service work from now on, if you need anyone to do it for you at all.  Have the lube jock reimburse you for an engine.  I think you deserve a new engine and not used if they forgot to put oil back in.

Last time I went to one of these places they forgot to put power steering fluid back in.  I had an oil change and a power steering flush done at the time.  They also tried to tell me my fluid was black and that I needed a tranny flush, even though I had it done the previous month.

Canadian tire has lots of money and insurance. They can afford to put in a new engine although I don't know that I would trust them to install an engine in my vehicle.
I could tell you stories about Canadian Tire that would be upsetting to any honest person, but I don't want to spend any more time in court with them. Been there, done that, 20 years ago!
I'd certainly press for a new GM engine, stating that you've maintained YOUR engine for..... and that you will have no idea what shape the used engine is in or how it's been maintained.
If you have time and money get a lawyer, if not bite the bullet and let them put in a used engine and hope for the best.
I hope you have taken lots of pictures of your truck...under the hood, the fenders etc.... just in case they need to pay for bodywork after they throw in another engine!

Let us know how it works out.

Amen sister! I like to hear their spiel...and listen intently...and then say...no thank you...actually I don't usually have that problem...my dad does a lot of business with the local car places...and taught a lot of the mechanics eons ago...sooooo...I don't have too many people try to take advantage of me...(or laugh at me..that makes me very angry)..

Sucks about your oil change experience...wow....forgetting oil....at an OIL change place....amazing...true about Walmart and lug nuts though....

I agree and also to note on this, have it taken to a dealership to get the motor swap done they will give you the best warranty for the job!!!!!!!!!

Cant make fun of all chain tire stores

But we also have never done a half-a$$ed job on the work we do!!

Forgeting oil is horrible! They make us put a big orange cone on the engine before we put it in the air, so really you can't forget!

But in your situation I would call my lawyer so quick! def demand a new engine!!

I worked at Jiffy Lube for a summer after I graduated college and we would put the oil cap on or near the hood latch to prevent the workers from leaving the cap off before shutting the hood.  Seen some crazy stuff, too.  Their main goal was upsell, upsell, upsell.  You could easily go in for a standard oil change and end up with air filter, engine flush, serpentine belt replacement in a jiffy.  Wait a minute...is that what the name means???

When I worked at the dealership (chevy...) we got a car in that a "shop" had messed up the oil change. The owner (of the car) threw a serious fit with the "shop's" insurance company, and got hisself a NEW motor, installed at the dealership. The squeaky wheel, gets the grease, squeak a LOT!

Seriously, if they can screw up an oil change, an engine swap is FAR beyond their capabilities. And what problems are you going to have down the road? How long are they going to guarentee their work? What else are they going to screw up?

Don't even let them touch it, get a lawyer, tow it to a dealer, get it done right, and be done with them. (make sure you get them to cover legal fees as well.)

I talked with a lawyer , he told me that a Judge will never give you more than what you had, if you have a truck with 125K on it, then the shop has to restore it to the condition it was in when it entered the shop. The work has to be preformed by the shop that caused the problem ( its in the fine print on the back of the work order). They are going to replace my bottom end with a rebuilt one and give me a one year warrenty, I will have drive with my fingers crossed and hope they didn't screw anything else up.

Thats all folks!
