Hello all. I am new the blazer forum. As a kid my uncle had a blazer and since then I wanted one. I don't actually have one yet but wanted to get in touch with the blazer community. I have the bad luck to own a nissan and wish I had never gone foreign(it was only $500 at the time and I needed a ride.) I am trying to buy a 1985 s-10 blazer 4x4. Can you guys and gals tell me about any problems I may find with this year model? From the ad it appears to be in good shape. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Welcome!

I had an '85 S10 Pickup with the 2.8L and it was a dog. If the blazer you are looking at is coming with the 2.8L and you are at all performance oriented, you will be disappointed. The 4.3L would be a much better choice for stock performance, not to mention the fact that a v8 can be dropped into an '85 4.3L truck with very little changes needing to be made.

As with any vehicle that is 20+ years old, you will want to really check out the body and frame for signs of accidents and to make sure that there isn't too much rust that could compromise the safety of the vehicle.

Good luck with your hunt!

As long as it runs fairly well, I don't really care a lot about all-out performance. It just needs to be reliable and get decent gas mileage. It will be my daily driver for a while since I just got a new job and won't be a ble to afford to do too much to it for the time being. Some mild at tires and a set of fog lights are my plans for the moment. The area I live in has some bad fog at times.

With my 87 Blazer with a 2.8 and 4x4 I got 13 mpg with it. Just to let you know about how "good" of gas milage is.

How big is the gas tank on them? I have a 15 mile commute so 13 mpg won't be all that bad. My nissan has a 13 gallon tank and gets 245 miles before it gets to a quarter tank left.

Haha...you said ball 3 times...

Welcome to the site. I would necessarily think you would want a Blazer if you need a good gas mileage. It is a truck, after all, so compared to a car, you'll have horrible gas mileage. But not many of us in here really care about that.

I don't really worry about the gas mileage that much but I don't want to throw away alot of money on a great big motor that makes lots of power when I don't need it. most of the places i like to go I could get in with my nissan but couldn't get out of. The 4x4 would solve that problem.

Welcome to the site. I've only been here for a couple of days and I love it. I own a '74 Blazer, an '85 Blazer and an '87 Jimmy. All mine are full size with v8 engines. I've driven the small ones and I would never have a 2.8L but the 4.3L has plenty of power.
I don't check my gas milage because I'm afraid I'd ruin my fun.
Whenever I check over a Blazer, the first thing I look for is rust. I've spent years removing rust.
The s10 Blazers seem to wear out ball joints and front brakes. Make sure and check the condition of the coolant and the cooling system. Replacing heater cores can be a bitch. Check for coolant leaks at the intake manifold and the water pump.
I think the '85 S10 Blazer uses a cable to actuate the front axle lock and they can break after high milage and use.
Happy hunting.

Id go with a blazer with the 4.3. with my 97 with a 4.3 I get 19-22 mpg compared to the 87 with a 2.8 at 13-15mpg. Plus the 4.3 are more fun. lol
I think they are a 18 gal. tank.
