Play in the wheel???

I know my power steering pump is shot. I put fluid in and it does the whole whinning noise and smoke is everywhere( hitting the exhaust), then no fluid in res. Now my queston is why and what would cause the play in the wheel. Its almost a quarter turn then it catches. Is it the gear box or what??? Oh its a 93 s10 blazer 4x4. Just bought her tonight!!! Shes ugly but I love s10 body style and everything about them. Thanks in advance guys. Hog
