I have a '93 GMC Jimmy with 4.3 and 4L60E transmission. The trans is starting to go. A friend has a rebuilt 700R 4x4 trans that he's willing to sell me. Can I swap this trans into my Jimmy? Will everything work like before? Any items that I'd have to change(wiring harness, switches....) Let me know.  Thanks.

The 4L60E cannot be replaced with a 700R4.  While the mechanicals inside the transmission are very similar, the 700R4 was never electronically controlled like the 4L60E is.

Thanks for the information.
Now he also has a rebuilt 4l60e that came out of a car. He said the swap is possible if I just swap the tailpiece sections. Is this true? Or does the swap require too much?

While 'just swapping the tail sections' is true, it involves the changing of the tail shaft.  The tail shaft comes out through the front of the transmission, requiring all of the internals to be removed.  It isn't as simple as it sounds.

Generally it costs less in the long run to rebuild your current tranny. Most rebuilders will make it better then stock, especially if they take pride in theri work and offer a warrenty. The 700R4/4L60/4L60E tranny has been used in all rear wheel GM vehciles half ton and lighter since the early '80s. There are millions of them out there, litterally.

hence its rep as the most commonly rebuilt.
