I have a 1992 chevy K1500 blazer. It appears to be the stock rearend. It has 10 bolts around the inspection cover. Does that mean I have a 8.5" Ring gear with 30 spline axles? Does anyone know?

Look for the ID tag on the cover and the ID stamp on the outside of the Axle shaft. Most of these came with a DANA axle.
I will try to find the links I have for DANA information so that you can decode your axle.

Try looking in the glove box and see if you can find the code for the Axle
here are some codes to cross with:
4x4, 10 bolt cover, 4.10 ratio GT5
4x4, 14 bolt cover, 4.10 ratio GT5
4x4, 10 bolt cover, 3.42 ratio GU6
4x4, 10 bolt cover, 3.73 ratio GT4
4x4, 14 bolt cover, 3.42 ratio GU6
4x4, 14 bolt cover, 3.73 ratio GT4
4x2, 3.08 ratio GU4
4x2, 3.42 ratio GU6
4x2, 3.73 ratio GT4
4x2, 4.10 ratio GT5

Its a 3.42 GM 10 bolt for sure, I have never seen a 1500 series one with a DANA 14 bolt. Not saying they arnt out there, i just dont recal ever noticing. Ive seen 2500 series and 3500 series Tahoes with DANA's though...
Im just curiouls of the ring gear size and axle splines. It has an open carrier and I see a rebuilt Gov-lok on ebay I was going to make a bid on, i just want to make sure I do indeed have a 8.5 ring gear and 30 spline axles before i bid, i know there was an 8.2 10 bolt rear but I believe thats for older GM cars and I have seen some 28 spline truck axles in teh past but i believe they were for older GM trucks...

You can check your RPO code as MNHawk suggested, you can also check for a code on the right rear of the axle tube (might need some sandpaper to find it). I have changed my gearsets so often that I would have to pull the cover to be sure and do an inspection.

true true, thanks guys, i wasnt aware that RPO codes would tell you the difference between splines and ring gear diameters, i thought they just told ratio. i will look into it.
