wiring up lights?

In the spring time, I'm going to herculiner the side steps smooth. Right now they have three grooves in them. I'm going to make them flat. I want to put some lights in them and wire them in so when I open the doors, they go on. But not when I turn the dome light on from inside the car. I would also like for when I get the remote for the keyless entry for the chevy dealership, how would I rig them up so they would go on when I hit the unlock button on the remote. I figured I would have to wire them in to the dome light somehow, but how? Also, could I wire them up to a switch somwhere so I can turn them on and off when I want too for show.
