Johnkoch -> Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 9:40:07 PM)

What do you guys think it would cost to get my front lower balljoints replaced on average from a shop?I have a 96' 4x4 4 door

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 9:41:41 PM)

probably about 100.00 bucks a side parts and labor maybe less maybe more i know a shop that charges that out here in az last time i checked they might have changed there price but thats just an estimate

Johnkoch -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 9:55:24 PM)

Well i got the uppers replaced when one seperated while driving and it cost 290 for both uppers ,but that was from a shop that was closed becuz of high prices and not enough customers

TripleBlackBlazer -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 9:57:18 PM)

Two shops I've been to have quoted around the same price for me for all four (upper and lower both sides) at around a 6 hour job at $55/hr (which is cheap) for about 350-400 in labor, plus cost of parts.  The lowers were quoted as taking about an hour longer which I don't understand.  They all need to be drilled/chiseled out to get the rivets off.  Does it really take an extra hour to get the bottoms?  I've read a lot on this forum that if you're going to replace the lowers, you might as well replace the uppers, too, while you have everything opened up already.  If good quality balljoints weren't so dang expensive I'd have it done already.  Though, pay a little now, or pay a lot later when your steering knuckle separates and rolls down the highway...

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you will need an alignment when all is said and done so throw that in there as well.

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 9:58:27 PM)

yea if you call around you can usually use everyone against everyone basically saying well these guys are charging this after you find out what they are charging and just have a price war between a few shops thats what i do when i don't have the tools necessary to do something myself which is rare but does happen i had a shop for a while out here that use to let me come in and use there equipment to do some repairs cause they were a small shop now there closed [:(] so i don't get the use of there lift anymore

Johnkoch -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 10:20:40 PM)

Thats probably what i will do,ill just wait till monday then thiers like 6 differents shops in my town that i can call up on monday.

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/20/2007 10:21:18 PM)

let us know what you find out how much and if you had a fun price war lol

Mapoftazifosho -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/21/2007 1:06:10 PM)

I'm in the process of replacing mine and I completely understand why some places charge an arm and a leg. It's a huge PITA. I have all the necessary air tools, but when it comes to a rust belt car with 80k miles on it...welll I've been cursing a lot!

I am not done yet and I am about 4 hours deep. At this point I have the new ball joints in, but we're only talking about the driver's side...

I wouldn't do them for a friend for $100...

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/21/2007 4:15:35 PM)

yea alot of places will charge alot and some will beat there prices thats why you call around and get prices then start a price war between them they want your money so they will do what it takes to get it just a piece of mind for you [;)]

lennyblazer -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/21/2007 5:17:27 PM)

I was quoted $750 for all 4 including parts plus an alignment. So I opted to do it myself, which is not the easiest job but it is doable, I think it came out to about $110 for all the parts.

swartlkk -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/21/2007 6:13:17 PM)

I changed the driver's side on my Bravada by hand (no air or power tools) and it was a major pain.  Called around the next day and was quoted $250 (including alignment) to complete the job on the passenger side.  Needless to say, I jumped at that price!  It wasn't worth my time to do it myself.  I also think the new guy that quoted me that price didn't keep his job very long!

lennyblazer -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/21/2007 7:02:59 PM)

Yeah I would have jumped at that quote as well. I have no air tools and the only power tool was the drill to drill out the rivets, but so far it is going a lot smoother on the driver side (I did the passenger side first).

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/21/2007 8:06:26 PM)

yea swartlkk that price by far would have gotten that guy fired i called around out here in az and got prices of 1000.00 for parts,labor and an alignment i was like yea i will do it myself when the time comes

95_4door -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/22/2007 8:49:29 AM)

I had a shop just try to charge me $330 for one lower ball joint and an alignment.

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/22/2007 9:05:10 AM)

ouch that is like committing a crime $330.00 are they serious whoa

95_4door -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/22/2007 9:28:27 PM)

He said like 90 for the ball joint, 75 for the alignment, and 2 hours labor.

thegr81 -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/22/2007 11:14:46 PM)

thats just ridiculous on price like i said though if you don't have the tools to do it yourself start a price war alot of shops will meet or beat competitor's price.

TripleBlackBlazer -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/23/2007 5:27:11 AM)

$90 was too much for ball joint.  Advance retails Moogs for $71 a piece.  $75 seems close on the alignment.  And like I said, the time estimate I got was a little over 2 hours for lowers on both sides at $55/hr.

   71
+  75
+  83
------
$ 229

And that's with retails prices for a Moog.  A shop should be able to do better on parts prices than retail.  $330 for one ball joint sounds like they threw out a high number because they realize it's a pain and not worth it for them.  I once took my Wife's old '95 Grand Am to a Firestone (NEVER AGAIN) to get inspected and they manage to rack up an $800 bill to get it to pass.  The only thing that really needed to be replaced was an inner tie rod end which is a pain to replace.  I think they just overpriced so that wouldn't have to deal with it and could make money off other customers on jobs that were easier and could get out the door quicker.  And heck, if I ended up paying the $800 or you ended up paying the $330, then they made some extra cash.  Win/win for them!

95_4door -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/23/2007 2:10:43 PM)

I ended up doing my ball joint myself. I had to take the front axle out in order to get the lower joint out. Once I got it out, I replaced the upper one too, since it was also original. It only cost me about $50 for the upper and lower with my discount from work. It took me about 4 hours to do both.

Johnkoch -> RE: Estimate price,Balljoint replacement (10/26/2007 7:52:05 PM)

I went around and got estimates and talked people down and all that and the cheapest i could get someone to was 237.99 plus tax,which actually ended up the first place i went to.
