you need to remember that JL uses high quality internal parts. Their slash series amps in particular are considered overpriced to those looking for the cheap way out. What they dont realize is that the reliability and performance is well worth the cash ...in comparison.

bobditts is right, JL is spendy, but when you really look at the build of their drivers and amps you get what you pay for in the long run.  Especially with their amps

I couldnt tell you what retail is. But I do know that they are worth the cash. sure you could go with a cheaper brand and model because it saves you money. But if you havd the knowledge and means to test the raw power produced, you would see that it is no where near as clean as the "expensive" amp. The "expensive" amps are usually fairly under-rated as well. I will make a simple comparison for you. Lets compare a focal amp to an infinity amp. That would be like comparing a mercedes to a honda. One obviously has a much better build quality as well as performance. Sure they both get you from point A to point B, but one is the obvious better choice. Only downside is affordability.

i dont care guys, keep the debate going. lol. It basically boils down to preference. Personally I would much rather spend $2k on a single genesis amp knowing that the customer service and quality of the amp is many times greater than that of a $300 amp that produces the "same" power.

In my case....I'd get 2 of the $300 ones, have twice the power, and $1400 in my pocket.

I guess it deosnt matter as much when all you are trying to achieve is loud bass. I prefer nice tight punchy bass with a potential to get decently loud. I cant stand to listen to anything over 129dbs while driving around. The cleaner the power, the better the sound. If I buy cheaper equipment with dirty power, the overall sound is greatly effected. It also can depend on if the person has ever heard the difference between dirty and clean power.

I believe there is a major difference in the wattage that you get out of different levels of amps.  If you spend cash on cheaper amps that are way over rated, you are not going to get as "clean" of power as you would with a more expensive amp.  I have always believed in running my drivers with more expensive wattage, you will see a major increase in your driver life with a higher end amp.  This is just my personal prefrence as well tho, I agree with bob when he says the cleaner the power the better the sound.  I like to aim my stuff more towards the SQ side with clean power and in turn clean sound.

all of my gear (with the exception of my new 8" woofers coming) are all left over gear from my sedan installjust extra "junk" I have laying around. The onyl real money I have spent on the blazer so far is the alarm and the 1/0ga wiring (and wiring accessories - fuse holder and fused distro).

zapco is definitely a step up or 2 above JL. JL is not anywhere near top of the line, they just seem to get picked on the most.

My 8" subs are being sent out today. Still have no idea what kind of enclosure I want. The design im leaning towards right now is 2 downfiring behind each from seat and forward porting just above the center console.
