My guess is that either you have a bad 4x4 switch or the vaccum switch on the transfer case if boogered up/needs replacement. I am not sure on what the costs of these are but I am guessing that the 4x4 switch should be about $30. If the vaccum switch is bad then it would be pretty difficult to get it back into 2wd (takes multiple tries to get it in). Hope this helps you out some.

It sucks to have to unload a bunch of cash on your vehicles at one time but you should realize that this could happen to you if it's a Ford, Dodge or (God forbid) Import. But once these repairs are done they'll be out of your hair for a while. I've got the last year of the fullsize blazer which happens to have a diesel. I picked it up last year for 14G with 220,000km. So far i've replaced the alternator twice and recently the engine has been running rough with no codes to go by so i have to replace parts one by one untill it's fixed. Being electronically injected the obvious would be the Fuel Solinoid Driver $400, then the Injection pump $1100 and the injector nossles (should be replaced with the pump) and a set of performance marine nossles go for $500. These prices are for parts alone and if i wanted Genuine GM just multiply by 2. There's over sixteen hours involved in shop labour so luckily i'm mechanically inclined Given the rarety of these trucks I have no problem with repair costs, it sucks but i think it's worth while since this truck is practically showroom quality. The only thing with trading in for a different truck, better the devil you know than the devil you don't

ORIGINAL: cjh I feel your pain...just bought a 96, havent had it on the road yet cause the frickin' brake lights don't work. I cant figure out how to get at the turn signal switch. I'm thinking of removing it with a 9 iron. This should probably be posted in another thread, but I have to reply, since I also have a '96 and have done this. You have to remove the bottom panel of the dash. If you look under the dashboard, there is a line of screws running along the bottom edge. Just remove all of these, and the panel lifts up enough for you to get to the turn signal switch. There may be a couple more screws near the radio that you might have to remove. The switch is located right next to the cigarette lighter and ashtray. It's a pain in the butt, but it's not too hard. Also, since the turn signal and hazard switches are right next to each other, you may as well replace both, since the other one may have never been replaced anyway. You can do it in about an hour. Good luck.
