Hello All.. I have just purchased a 1984 K5 Blazer. My new hooptie! It is in rough condition, approximately 136000 miles give or take 100 or 2. Previous owner shows paperwork for new engine approximately 40000 miles ago. Motor seems to run fine. The problem is when in gear, first accelerating it wants to die on me. After moving, runs fine. In de-aceleration to make a turn or stop, it wants to die, when starting accelaration again. There are no markings on this carberator at all. Did they still put quadrajets in k5's in '84? If they did, should I toss it and go with a nice aftermarket or do you see the problem even being in the carberator? Thanks!

Which tranny do you have?

Could be the primary jet, although that jet should cover most driving and engine rpms. Teh secondary should only kick in when your stomp on it or get to higher rpms. Ever change the fuel filter?

Its been almost 2 decades since I worked on a carb.

What does your cap and rotor look like. Could be as simple as a cracked cap, or corrosion on the contacts. Check the points (if it still has them) too.

'84 should have an HEI distributor (ie. no points), but I would take a look at your cap/rotor. Another thing to rule out would be a vacuum leak. In another thread you were looking for some information about vacuum line routings. You shouldn't have any vacuum lines just open to the outside. This could cause the stumbling problem you are experiencing. Also, make sure that the vacuum advance vacuum line is properly installed to both the bottom plate of the carb (can't remember if it should be on the front or rear) as well as properly installed on the distributor.

It is also possible that your timing is off. When timing my Chevelle, I would have someone sit inside the car with the engine running, trans in drive or reverse and the throttle lightly applied. I would then advance the timing until it would start to ping (detonation), then back it off. I have since moved on to a timing light which is much easier to use.

I just dug out my auto manuals and wouldn't you know it... I've got a Haynes for 67-87 Chevy Pickups and Blazers. Nothing very specific on any one, but better than nothing none the less.

Anyway, don't know if these pics will help with anything, but here they are... My Haynes manual isn't all that great...
