WHEN DRIVING AT ABOUT 50 MPH TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK UP ENGAGES AND DISENGAGES EVERY TIME UNDER LIGHT ACCELERATION GIVING ME A FLUXUATION OF 150 RPM'S OR SO AND KEEPS DOING IT AS LONG AS I'M AT THIS SPEED. STOPS DOING IT WHEN I REACH 65 MPH AND UP. HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT RECENTLY. WHEN I PULLED THE CODE IT WAS JUST A P0128 WHICH WAS "COOLANT TEMP. LOWER THAN THERMOSTAT TEMP." I DON'T THINK THAT WOULD CAUSE MY TCC PROBLEM. I CLEARED THAT CODE AND HAS NOT COME BACK NOW FOR ABOUT 100 MILES. BUT WHATS UP WITH MY TRANNY? SOUNDS LIKE TSB #990730016A . COULD NOT FIND THE TSB SUMMARY.

It is very likely that the ECT seeing the wrong temp would cause this. I know that on my bonneville with the 4L65E-HD, the reading from the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor controls the variable lockup of the TCC.

Now when you say this happens, are you pressing down on the gas when it unlocks a bit? If you have a problem with the ECT, it is quite likely that it is what is causing your TCC to partially unlock. I would get your ECT diagnosed properly before looking into issues with the TCC or trans. It is possible that you have one of the following; a bad ECT sensor, or a failing/failed t-stat.

Also, please ALWAYS include your vehicle year, make, model, and engine at the very least. I can assume Chevy Blazer given the forum, but I have no idea as to the year and engine. And it is bad forum etiquette to type in caps. It doesn't make you any more noticeable. Oh and PLEASE DO NOT START THE SAME THREAD IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS!!! New Members Area is for new member introductions ONLY. The proper forum is the General Tech Help for this question (the location of this thread).

This bulletin is being revised to change the Model information and text. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-07-30-016A (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle)

Some customers may comment that at times the transmission seems to slip, or that there is a loud roar from the engine with slow acceleration. This condition is most noticeable after the vehicle has sat idle for 12 or more hours, or on hot days when the A/C is on and the vehicle moves slowly with traffic.

Typical comments from customers may include the following conditions:

^ Intermittent slipping

^ Intermittent downshift followed by an upshift, both with no apparent reason

^ Busyness or cycling of the TCC (torque converter clutch) at steady throttle conditions and on a level roadway

^ Noisy cooling fan

The type of concern described above requires further definition. The customer should be asked the following questions:

^ Is the situation more pronounced with higher vehicle loads such as when pulling a trailer?

^ Do warmer ambient temperatures make the situation more pronounced?

^ When the condition occurred, did you have the A/C on, and were you driving in stop and go city traffic?

^ Does the condition exhibit itself on the first start-up after sitting more than eight hours?

If the customer indicates that these conditions apply, and your observation confirms that the vehicle is operating properly, provide the customer with the vehicle operating description included at the end of this bulletin. Further action may not be necessary. A service procedure follows if further definition is required.

Diagnostic Aids

Cooling fan operation or the resulting sound varies. The cooling fan clutch may be described as a continuously variable clutch. If the vehicle engine is running, the fan blade is always turning unless the fan clutch is non-functional. The speed of the fan in relation to engine speed is temperature dependent. Maximum fan speed (air flow and related fan noise) through the engine compartment is experienced under two conditions.

1. When the vehicle sits in an unused condition for several hours, the viscous fluid within the thermostatic fan clutch assembly migrates and fully engages the clutch of the fan. After a short drive, the viscous fluid will migrate to the storage area in the fan clutch and the fan clutch will slip, reducing the noise (roar of the fan). This is normal thermostatic fan clutch operation.

2. When the engine is running, and the air being drawn by the fan or pushed through the radiator from the vehicle movement reaches a high enough temperature, the fan clutch will fully engage the fan clutch, drawing additional air through the radiator to lower the engine coolant temperature and A/C refrigerant temperature. When the cooling fan clutch fully engages, fan noise increases (for example; this is the same as switching an electric household fan from low to high speed). Some customers have interpreted this sound increase to be an increase in the engine RPM due to transmission downshift, transmission slipping, or TCC cycling. As the engine c

Sorry about that, I tried submitting my problem in the General tech. help first but it wouldn't let me, I was getting that failed or not authorized message, and then I went to the newbies section and found out all along that I wasn't even logged in and got it posted there then came back to the Gen. tech help and posted here. Yes it is a 2002 Chevy Blazer auto. 4x4 Vortec. It does happen under a slight load with a little acceleration or climbing a hill right between 45 and 65 mph. When you say ECT is that Electroninic Coolant Temp. sensor. I do give it gas when I feel the unlock just to see if it re-locks, and it does. I kind-a-figured it wouldn't be the TCC solenoid because the tranny works fine at 65 MPH and above. I'm going to take this TSB down to the shop today and show them. The truck is at a repair facility today. Hey thanks, I like that Chevelle ALOT. Oh and sorry about the caps lock on the thread won't let it happen again. Thanks.
