I wanted to do the same on my '96, but I was concerned with the shifter being a problem also.  I did notice that on my brother's '00 blazer the shifter sits further away  from the dash.  He would have no problem.  On the other hand, I saw that I barely had any space, so I just bought the JVC KD-AVX1.  That is the one that I have right now, and although its only a 3" screen, its fine for me.  I am eventually going to upgrade and get the JVC KD-AVX33, along with 2 portable dvd players that I already have, I am going to put them on the headrests.  If you don't want to go with a small JVC screen, then I would also suggest you to measure very carefully to not make a mistake.

This JVC was about $480 if I can remember.  But then again, that was when it first came out.  Now this one is probably a lot cheaper.  JVC has newer models that are the upgraded versions of this one, which have better, and more features such as bluetooth.  When I had it installed, I told the shop to bypass the parking brake feature.  Normally when you install it, you have to apply the parking brake in order to watch dvds.  I had this feature bypassed.  Now don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna watch dvds and drive, but I wanted the passengers to see it.  But like I said, this is only one option.  If you do in fact want to have a bigger size screen, then I would measure carefully, and also talk to someone at a car audio shop to make sure that it will work fine.  I had thought about buying a flip out screen, and then shifting down to 1st and letting the screen flip out, and putting it back when it came out, but then I thought that would be uncomfortable, and a hassle.  The JVCs are just another option for you.

JVC KD-AVX11

This is the one that I want to get later on in the future.  This one will work even better on our trucks because the screen is all the way on the right(away from the shifter).
JVC KD-AVX33

And this is the one with navigation.

I have a 7 inch flip out.  I don't have the monitor up 98% of the time behind the wheel, but its not a problem for when I do have it up.  And my chassis for the receiver was a little bigger than the dash kit so it actually sticks out farther than its supposed to be.

your blazer is also a 98, mine is a 96, 95-97s all had a different dash style than the 98 and newer, the comlumn shifter is right in front of the radio, on yours its off to the side.

here is a few photo's.

Yikes!  What was GM thinkin'?  I'd sell my truck and buy a 98, but that's probably not an option for you.  But seriously, you could just leave the monitor up 24 hours a day.  That's what I would probably do.  Or buy a DD model and modify the dash instead.

yeahi know i thought about making it into a 98 by puting the new dash, headlights, and bumpers on it but thats a little pricey. but i really want a dvd flip out in it because all my vehicles have one in them, the grand prix gtp has a alpine touchscreen, and the cutlass supreme has a panasonic touch screen, and now i want to get a eclipse touch screen that i found for pretty cheap. i dont want it to be up 24/7 tho cause that causes problems with theft and ****, i could just shift into 1st the second i turn the truck on so it has time to pop up then shift into drive.

Another reason why I chose my headunit, is cause of what you just said--theft.  My head unit has a detatchable face, and I believe the other head units that I showed you, also have detachable faces too.   Just letting you know.

I think Lastcoupe has something like that too.  Check the ROTM voting thread for a pic of his ride.  I think its 5% also.

ive had to many break ins in my vehicles so i definatly want a detatchable faceplate, but im still worried about the flip out when it might hit the shifter andwhen it goes down it might hit it when the truck gets shut off.

I had a 7" flip out in my 96 s-10 blazer. It does work but if you want to flip out the screen you have to have the vehicle in gear so the shifter is below the head unit. If the shifter is in park it DOES hit the shifter but only when the screen is flipping up. But if you are parked you can just put it in gear, flip it up, and put it back in park. It does not hit the shifter once it is up.

If you are watching it from the drivers seat, about two inches of the shifter is blocking the upper left part of the screen. Kinda sucks but no big deal.

I would take pictures for you but I actually took it out (it is for sale on ebay right now actually) and put in my other head unit. I am a picky person when it comes to sounds quality and i could not adjust as many of the audio controls as i wanted to. But with a Pionner Premier 12 with a box made for the specs of that sub and a 2000 watt amp, watching Saving Private Ryan sounds freakin amazing!!

Kenton

Forgot to mention, if you put a flip screen in, make sure to put it back down before you shut off the vehicle. Mine automatically went down when you shut the truck off and it would hit the shifter if I forgot to put it down beforeI put it in park and shut it off.

Basically it is a pain in the ass if you really flip it up a lot. I never really did all that much. You get into a habit of remembering to close it first though so it really isn't too bad
