Hey there, I own a 2001 Blazer ZR-2 with 160 000km approx., is it really necessary to do these 2 particular maintenaces on the vehicle. I have never done either and was wondering how necessary this might be on my SUV with regards to performance/wear & tear on other components (will it increase better braking?)....asked several mechanics with different answers...any info. will be appreciated......thankx ZR-2

It's not a bad idea to do the flushes. All fluids get dirty and when they're dirty they actually help to wear out the components that they are supposed to lube and protect. Like changing your engine oil. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, which means that it picks up moisture from the air and mixes with it, so flushing the brake fluid is an excellent idea. By flushing the brake fluid and removing the moisture, the brake temperature should be lower and the brakes should work better. Water and brake fluid do not compress the same or dissipate heat the same. Getting the old dirty fluid out should also extend the life of the rubber seals in the sytem. If I followed my own advise, all my vehicles would still be like new...

I agree with chevy lover on flushing out certain systems, I suggest checking brake fluid first in the master cylinder, if its black or getting coffee colored that means the fluid is deteriating the rubber brake lines and seals and therefore would need a good flushing. Also for better longitivity of seals flushes to help to extend the life of those. Hope this aids in helping you decide to flush your fluids.
