They use a light meter to measure the true % of light passing through the window.  But anyone experienced with looking at vehicles would be able to tell if it's a little darker than normal, and an over-zealous adjuster might alert someone who can do something about your tint.  In NC the penalty is a fine and you have something like 30 days to correct it.  Although I'm sure theres a permit process you can go through or something...you dont see limos getting pulled over all the time for window tint

does florida have the AS1 line regulation?  in nc you cant have any tint on the windshield below the AS1 line, and if you do it makes the vehicle non-driveable.  I highly doubt theyll raise your rate though for tint.  Insurance is statistics based, and I don't think i've ever heard a stat about window tint and accident correlations.

I actually bought my blazer in florida so its got a pretty nice tint as far as NC vehicles go..I have to pay $1.85 every time I get inspected so they can test the tint

I'm a little confused. You knew the illegality in advance, but now you're worried about the insurance company?

Window tint is also illegal in Illinois, but I have tint all the way around. When I got insurance on it, the isurance company looked at it and asked if the tint was factory or not. I told them no and she said that she will document it incase a window gets broken and they have to replace it, tint and all. They didn't even care that it was illegal to have it on there.

Otnietdehoo, here are your tint laws.

Windshield
Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

Front Side Windows
Must allow more than 25% of light in.

Back Side Windows
Must allow more than 25% of light in.

Rear Window
Any darkness can be used.
hopefully that will help.

this site should help everybody out with the laws.

thanks for that link

would the rear cargo area windows be classified as "back side windows" or "rear window"?

those are sorta what i thought they would be. i thought it was 25% on the front windows and then from the backseat back, it could be as dark as you wanted

They would be classified as back side windows.

My Blazer came with the Chevy 'privacy tint' and I don't think I'd want it any darker. At night it can be a little tricky, especially looking to back up. And Matt, no offense, but call me 'Richard'. I hate being addressed just by my last name. Guess it's a holdover from gym class in school.

You poor, poor people and states that require inspections and stuff....I have 15% all the way around and a windshield visor about 2" below the line, and although it IS technically illegal in Wyoming, we don't have any safety, emissions, or any other kind of testing!  Besides all that, I have a buddy who is a cop and says there are only two law enforcement tint meters in the state!  Hooray for states with not enough people to care!

my state law says that we cant have any tint on the front windows. my grand prix has 5% all around. and 4" strip on windsheild. never been pulled over for just tint. i plan on doing 5% on my blazer.

Jeremy, in your earlier post you said 'Superbright'. If that's correct, which of these bulbs did you use?
http://superbrightleds.com/specs/3156_57_specs.htm
or

Hey, how 'bout that! Finally got 'Super Member' status without having to postwh0re.

i would get the 3w luxeon one instead of the 25 LED one.  i have a flashlight that has something like 40 LEDs in it and i also have a beastly 5-Dcell Mag-Lite with a 5watt Luxeon LED in it and it is way brighter than the 40led one...

also from that chart, the 25LED one has a 30 degree beam pattern and the Luxeon one has a 130 degree pattern. i take that to mean, the 25LED one is more like a spotlight and the luxeon is more like a floodlight

here  in tennessee on cars you can have it darker that 35% on any window. trucks and suv's can be as dark as you want on the back and side windows but the front two cant be any darker that 35%.  and the front can have tint down to that line. mine is 10 or 15% i cant remember which and i haven't had but one run in w/ "johnny law" but he let me off.
i thought in FL you could have it as dark as you wanted?
