I have a 2000 LT 4x4 with the 4.3L and have pulled multiple people out, with my front hooks, from being stuck in mud. Once a GMC 2500HD, which was definatly heavier than my blazer and a nissan pathfinder which probably has a smaller engine because most of those have a 3.5L.  And these were both in reverse because i was using my front tow hooks.  You get better traction going in reverse and as long as you tow slow you should be alright.

For towing, it's fine... But for hardcore mud recovery... Not so much, lol, it can be done, but... Watch yourself!
