I have a  96 4x4 4dr with about 173K miles on the engine and about half that on a used J/Y tranny.
Bought it about 2yrs ago for $2000 and have put in the tranny and a new waterpump. Thats about it other than the normal maint stuff.

it's in need of alot of stuff....
Just found out that the intake gasket is leaking, has been overheating alot and most likely(at the least) needs a full gasket change from the heads up, if not the heads too.

And a major tune-up.....

Other things that need fixed are

1. Tires
2. A new Driverside mirror and the pass side is coming loose.
3. All new interior including seats, door panels and carpet.
4. New rear bumper(ask the wife about that one, well two(dents)
5. Repaint

Trying to think if it's worth fixing or should I trade it in for a new vehicle?
The dealer around here is doing a $4000 for any trade no matter what year, make, model or if it runs or not. if you buy one of there "Red Tag" vehicles(new and used)

If I trade it in it's HAS to be atleast as big as the Blazer and HAS to be 4dr.
I'd like to find something like a full size car or a Tahoe or something of that size.

Go with what is most fitting to your needs. If you want a Tahoe or a Suburban, get one. Don't let us influence your buying. One thing I will say though is if you get a Tahoe or Suburban, its a goofy driving vehicle as compared to a Blazer. Honestly, I'd consider the 4dr S-10s, or another 4-door Blazer.

trade it in all the newer years had real bad reliability issues

get rid of it and get a 94 or older s 10 blazer you wont regret it i did and it was the best decision i have ever made

Thats a matter of opinion. My Blazer has been more reliable than I could have expected from any other vehicle.

Yes, definitely a matter of opinion.  Having owned and repaired both 1st and 2nd generation S-series trucks, I think I'd rather have the 2nd generation.  Better motor (SCFI > CPI - in my opinion).  Equivalent transmissions.  Potentially a more problematic transfer case, but just about everything else is equivalent.  Brakes got a lot better in the 2nd gens, especially when dual piston fronts and disc rear brakes came in.

I'm keeping the blazer!

Just figured out that a full gasket change from the heads up, milling the heads,
and to do a  major tune-up , Tires, and a new driver and pass side mirror. Will cost me around $750-$800. So I will have a running car with new tires. My wife said she could deal with the insides the way they are as long as she has a car to drive.

So I'm trying to get a 90day loan for $1500 incase I need new heads. I will be able to pay it off with income taxes.
