Yes, I do have a job, but I need breaks every now and again, LOL. I'm a mechanical engineer by schooling with my masters in finite element analysis. I am currently employed by Goulds Pumps as a Process Engineer for the Commercial factory where I keep production moving. We have 2 process engineers including myself and it is our job to make sure that the assemblers have all of the parts that they need and the machine shop keeps producing parts. We are in the middle of a factory wide restructuring were we are moving machines (cutting concrete, pouring foundations, the whole works) and we just purchased a new horizontal CNC mill. I do CNC programming, fixture designs, tooling packages and improvements to all of the above. I grew up on a 2500 acre cash crop farm that, while I was in highschool, was run by my father and grandfather only. My grandfather has since retired and my father runs it with one hired hand now. I started fabricating and doing general mechanics work on tractors, trucks, & tractor trailers when I was 7. By 9 I was a pretty decent welder and could make pretty much anything I wanted to, but money wasn't always there to make such things. I started driving tractors at 9 as well. Being the oldest of 3 kids in my family, I was the worker while my sister and brother got to do other things. This left a bad taste in my mouth over the whole farming thing and that is why I choose to get out while I could. I graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY in '01 with a BS in Mech Eng concentration in fluids, and then again in '04 from RIT with my MS in Mech Eng concentration in FEA (as stated earlier). My passion has always been automobiles and I would love to restore them for a living, but very few can actually make it work. I'll start with my Chevelle once I have 3 things - time, space, & money. None of which do I currently have. I also know where my fathers first car is (and it's not in too bad of condition) and would love to buy that back and restore it for him. It is a '69 Nova SS 350 and he always told me that he regretted having to sell it. He is the main reason why I still have my Chevelle today. Hope that answered your questions. If you have any more, let me know.

oh and I've only cleaned my MAP sensor once since owning my Bravada, I clean my MAF sensor much more frequently on my Bonneville with the K&N filter, but only every oil change on the Bravada even though I probably don't need to, but I always get crap off of it.

Gee thanks! This job is SO much more stressful than anything else I have ever done before. I worked for Goulds Pumps when I was still in college as a coop design engineer for Product Developement. It is so rewarding to come back 5 years later to see a pump that you essentially designed (hydraulics asside) has taken off and is being sold around the world! Being a Process Engineer (Manufacturing Eng) is much more stressful than designing EVER would think about being on the worst day. I'm learning to deal with it now after close to 4 months working here, but it hasn't been easy. Next week I'll start going to the gym at 5am to try to mello myself out. I'd love to get a nice cnc lathe or milling machine. Even just a 3 axis CNC. I could build so much crap with it it's not even funny and I'd use it too. I love playing around with things like that. Its amazing how simple it really is, but its the cost that many can't overcome. If any of you need any advise on engineering issues, let me know. I don't have my Professional Engineering certification, but I can still do the work that those guys do and I don't need compensation for my efforts.

My bro is a mech. engineer as well. He used to work for John Deere, but now he does stuff for Volvo.

Alright a mechanical engineer. I wanted to be an engineer, however working full time, wife and two little kids, and going to school full time didn't leave time to go to labs. Got my degree in Business Administration and Management instead. Currently I do all the statistics for the whole company, 200+ employees. Plus I am repsonsible for ISO within the building. And every other special project that needs attention. I work for PII, we produce rouhgly 60,000,000 personalized pieces of mail every year. Yep, 60 million pieces of mail, and no two pieces are identical. Every single one of them is different. My auto knowledge comes from first hand expierence. Too poor to pay someone else to do it. I took several automotive repair classes while in high school, and my father was a grease monkey. Growing up in the 70's around muscle cars didn't hurt either. I bought them cheap because gas prices went up and the family man was dumping them for more affordable, practical cars. I put off toys until the kids got older, the oldest is a Senior in college and the youngest is a senior in high school. My toys, if you haven't figured it out by now, 4x4's. And I really like the S10-blazers.

Well, between my coworker and myself, we are responsible for keeping all of our documentation ISO compliant. What a PITA! I am quickly becoming the author of many work orders and assembly instructions!

I ll be studying mechanical engineering next year at Oakland University here in Michigan (As long as i get accepted). I've been obsessed with cars my whole life, and every day I'm happy that i have my own engine to play with and tinker with. I work at a country club just around the corner. it's called Birmingham country club, and the only reason that the Ryder Cup was held at oakland hills, and not birmingham last year was because oakland is bigger, and more well known, but birmingham is the only club in the area with a waiting list for membership. I'm on the golf staff, using and abusing golf carts is my trade and specialty, i also handle golf clubs from time to time.

Good for you man. I hope that you don't aspire to have a career in engineering in the automotive world. It is a VERY difficult feild to get into and has a high turn around rate, always looking for the latest, greatest, and cheapest.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, because my dad works for an automotive company. They do packaging of replacement parts for the big three, mostly ford (if you take a ford to a dealer, and they put a new part in it, theres a 1 in 3 chance they packaged and shipped it). He's in upper management, and he works about 60 hours a week, and still has things to do. they are big into quality control, because they have to be. It's just unbelievable how cutthroat the auto companies are, but they have to be to deal with outsourcing like asian labor, etc. I would like to do automotive, but it probably won't happen. No big deal. Thanks for the encouragement. I was just so excited to hear that you, one of the smartest guys on the boards, do what i wanna do.

Hey, stick with it! Are you still in HS? If you are, just keep your grades up, especially in the more tech type classes (physics & math) and also take a tech elective (like shop or something similar). Engineering schools really look at your class history, and like to see the grades in the tech classes.

Yeah, i already applied to oakland, and they sent me a letter saying they wanted to see my first semester grades, which isn't a problem, because i got a 3.5 first quarter, will have very close to that second quarter, and I have my last two finals tomorow, so hopefully i will know by early february. I am a high school senior. My HS has one of the best engineering programs in the country, and i've been in it the last three years, so that helps, plus i love physics. How much math is actually involved in the profession? BTW, i checked out my MAF today, and it looked great. I had a bitch of a time getting it off though. I thought that the metal parts that sandwich it were part of it too, so i took the hose off that goes from the air box. What a pain in the ass. How pissed was i when i got it off and realized i just had to undo those four torx screws. whew. I also greased the ball joints. I couldn't resist. I'm a grease monkey, and its in the low 50's and sunny today in detroit.

As far as math in engineering is concerned, it all depends on what you are going to be doing. If its high factor of safety design work, then you really don't have to worry much beyond basic math. In my Finite Element stuff, there's a TON of math. A lot of the classes I have taken are way over what I'll probably ever use, but it is cool none-the-less to know how things work. I can tell you the math behind why a spinning top stays up and how long it will stay there. Math can show you some cool stuff if you stick with it. I would not recommend pulling the MAF apart by removing the screws. The body has to be aligned properly and I wouldn't feel comfortable aligning it without it being completely off the truck. It isn't all that hard to remove, plus, I put some dielectric grease on the inside of the rubber hoses to make for easy disassembly later on.

Yeah, but there's that screen in there, do you take it out from the back side? What are the consequences of such misalignment? Thanks.
