Hi guys, yep I am in the same boat, I bought a cheapo Ebay tubing and silicon coupling which actually are really good quality and then bought a real K&N cone filter and I now have the boost and the sound for 1/3rd of the price of a real k&n C.A.I, the problem I just now got hit with is going into getting it smogged they were adamant about me providing and exe.Carb# cause the k&n set up did not match the real model#57-3017-2 made and sold by k&n and consists of filter, black plastic tubing and a black plastic heatsheild box that is only 3 sided (I think) I called k&n and asked for a exe.carb# they had me take pics of my installation and told me it doesnt match the #57-3017-2 which is meant for my 2001 blazer 4.3L, if I can find a pic of one installed from anybody on this forum I would be very, very much obliged..I am leaving on vacation in 2 weeks for 3 months and my registration is due next week, I dont have the $ for the real k&n #57-3017-2 and I stupidly threw away my OEM setup,I am as they say "in a automotive pickle" can any of you fine gentlemen help me out that may have or know where I can find a pic of this k&n CAI kit installed in a 4.3L Blazer? If I email k&n this pic, they will send me the necessary redtape california exe.CARB# certification form. THANK YOU ALL....boulonman 2001 LS, aftermarket smooth throttle plate, my own "k&n cai", shaved emblems, pewter metallic paint,21" chrome mags w/low profile rubber, flowmaster 40 series mffler with resonator tip, edelbroeck sensoshocks, sheepskins, meticulous maintenance and wax/wash, a real head turner and sweet sounding-looking ride, all I need is a freaking picture of this k&n c.a.i airfilter kit installed and I am free to go on vacation..Please help!! Peace, boulonman

I can understand the predicament you're in, but I can't believe you're actually wanting one of us to do what you're asking.

If what I wrote offended you I apologize that was not my intent, however I dont which part you are referring too so allow to explain 2 things. The only difference between what I have versus a 300$ plus change price on a complete factory OEM kit is the price..I only bought the ebay kit for the tubing because it looks nicer that just the plain black rubber K&N kit, I bought a real K&N filter from the actual dealer, and modified my original air-box to look and perform exactely again like the original K&N kit, hence my set up does not effect the emissions whatsoever the only difference between the 2 is the price. (I paid 100$ and a few hours with a dremel tool versus the 300plus$ that K&N charges for their complete kit.) I agree that using somebody elses pic is not 100% honest but as I said, I am in a jam both money and time wise. At anyrate if I offended anybody else I apologize, that was not my intent. If you are offended because maybe what I wrote struck you telling others what to do it's quite the contrary, I shared my predictment so that others would be aware of needing that darn exe.CARB form and not repeat my mistake and negative consequences. If I felt that what I have now and the real thing were not 99% the same, I certainely would have not posted my question.) Let's be honest for a moment, the red tape behing emmision controls are based as always for the bottom line ($) Unless if what somebody does increases emmisions I dont see any serious more wrong doing than me simply asking for a pic in order to avoid buying the real thing which I cannot afford, or letting my registration run out and having to pay X3 the price of my regular registration in late due fees. So again I apologize to anybody else who may be offended by my request. If what I was doing would drastically change my emmissions, I would not tolerate it, but having to pay god knows how much more for a red tape on something I fabricated, that again is just a copy of the real thing, and performs exactely the same in terms of emmissions then k&n's 300+$ I dont think what I am asking for is that big of a deal, if you do, you have my apologies, regards, boulonman

Except part of the K&N price is going through the smog testing and certification. You just think there is no difference other than price. If you really want a pic then just google it, and don't make us accessories to fraud. You'd probably have better luck buying a used OEM filter box.

quote:
ORIGINAL: 99blaz Will removing the stock air box and just puting on a cone have the same performance effects as a cold air intake kit? No. That's not CARB legal, and the tubing is also different. The KN&N tubing is smoother flowing, or something. And the heat shield is a nice bonus.

Yeah, my concious got the better of me, I bought a boneyard complete OEM airfilter assembly for 100$ and junked my homemade deal, the kicker is that 2 days latter, the k&n people sent me that @#$% CARB sticker!!! Anyways, I wanna do it right and there are so many choices, now logic tells me a closed box that is fed from below through the grill would provide the coolest charge than a simple cone with heat sheild?? Am I barking up the wrong tree? So I am torn between the airaid fully enclosed non-oiled filter that they claim 10 ponies versus the real deal K&N which is oiled (clogs the MAF?) and only partially protected from underhood heat, what is the general consensus? I know everybody has an opinion like we all have a @#%% but surely all the data added up must lean towards one set up versus the other no? My other question was obvious, I am gonna put a flowmaster muffler 40 series or whatever is the proper model but doesnt the pre-cat and full cat still remain a choke point?, I know they have free flow cats but then there still remains that pesky pre-cat as a choke point, say I just add the muffler and maybe use bigger tubing downstream will that improve performance or just sound better? Again logic tells me that the C.A.I, muffler and a aftermarket throttle plate w/out the hump I installed should give me some real life seat in your pants feeling.. Anybody care to help me out? Much appreciated..peace boulonman,2001 LS, 2 dr, 2wd. 21"low profile rubber,senso-matic shocks, shaved emblems, sheepskins, throttle plate and soon to be C.A.I and exhaust when I know what works and what just sounds good or both!!

You'll only have MAF issues if you over oil the K&N... If you have a shop vac you can always give it a pass over get rid of any possible excess oil. This is always an option as well.
