a_tack : check out the new beretta px4, comes in a good variety of calibers (9mm/40/45) click it's a little more than your $450 range (only by about $70) but it's an incredible gun. it's illegal for personal sale here in Canada, but I fired it quite a few times over in detroit (i was working for canada customs at the time, and that is the new sidearm our officers carry) once we found out it was what we were getting. stupid me, i quit and joined up with the ambulance before i got trained on it :( personally it was the cleanest firing and lightest recoil 9mm that i've ever shot...the new rotating barrel cuts down recoil amazingly. you can get them with up to a 17rd mag (depending on local restrictions) which is great for a gun of it's size. hope that helps confuse your choice a little more!

ORIGINAL: BLK85 Keep your 870 then. If you dont want to spend some money to get something decent then the 870 is the best you can get. Dont be a keep ass, you get what you pay for. I have shot over 5-10k rounds through my Beretta in 4 years and have had little problem. It has jamed a few times but I clean it and never had a problem again. With a shot gun you want something decent since you use it the most. My dear riffle(Savage 300WSM) I use once a year and shot maybe 5 bullets out of it(4 to site in and 1 to kill the deer) my shot gun I shoot a lot more. haha ya true dat! my rifle usually takes like 2/3 shots to site then one shot for my deer that i kill (and then maybe a second one for the second deer) but ya i think this past duck hunting season i went thru like 3 boxes of shells in one weekend lol lots of ducks

AND in Kentucky one is trained not only in the use of handguns but ALL forms of deadly weapons which includes Knives, Numbchucks, throwing stars.........etc. However I prefer my Belgian made Browning 40 Cal S&W. unless I don't care for concealment then I use my Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum.

Well I found out there is a pistol club on my campus, so I am going to start getting involved with that. Try out some of their guns and research on a pistol purchase. So far I really like the 9mm Walther P99AS or the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm.

So I was talking to my neighbor, he's been a pizza delivery guy for a solid few years, and he says he got his concealed carry because of the 'nature of his job'. Pretty wild, not entirely positive I believe that was his reasoning though..or that he actually has a concealed carry better yet

I live by this rule.... ALWAYS carry, and NEVER tell.. carry for personal protection, not bragging rights..

Of the 3 guns you listed, I would choose the Springfield 1911 EXP 40. Reliability is the most important aspect of a carry gun and the 1911 has stood the test of time. I have carried a wide variety of handguns from a 32 Baretta Tomcat to a 45 hardballer longslide but the one I carry most is a box stock stainless Colt Officers ACP. I'll admit to being strongly opinionated here and am not looking to start a debate but I believe the 1911 is one of the two best pistol designs ever made. The other is the Walther PP series.

The other is the Walther PP series. I agree completely. I have decided on a good quality carry belt and a Bianchi Carrylok holster for my 1911. I will also be buying a Taurus 651SS .357 Mag revolver as a backup gun!

ORIGINAL: lennyblazer I have been shooting a 12ga. shotgun for 6-7 years now, and occasionally rifles (mainly .22's). I have a Remington 870 express right now and am thinking about upgrading to a Benelli shotgun, but I am torn between upgrading shotguns or buying a handgun when I turn 21. Out of the ones you mentioned I like the looks and size of the XD. I don't know much about handguns other than some of the more popular names (which tend to be larger guns). If you upgrade your shot gun look into a Beretta. When I was looking at shot guns I looked at many different brands, includeing Winchester, Remington, Benelli, and Beretta. The Beretta by far was the best gun. I have a 391 Urika, it cost me 700 4 years ago and are now around 1k. I would not hesitate to spend that much for it. I am trying not to spend more than $600 on a shotgun though and my friend has a Benelli Nova 12ga. that I like a lot. They seem to be well built and last a while, and they are a little cheaper than $1k. Then if I get a cheaper shotgun I could get a handgun too. You should also look for the discontinued Beretta AL390's sold at most Wal-Marts with sporting goods sections. They all are black synthetic models, but I bought one two years ago for $560 including tax, brand new. I've put at least 3000 shells through it, practing trap or skeet weekly, and use in competitions. Havent had a problem yet, knock on wood. I've shot my teammates' Benellis and the Beretta just feels more solid and refined.

ORIGINAL: a_tack getting a new rifle tomorrow!!!!! I will post pics! Went with the rifle instead of the handgun? I am very interested in handguns now and have narrowed it down to 6 guns from the web research I have done. All 9mm's, now I just have to go hold them, look them over, maybe shoot a couple rounds through them if they let me to make my decision. Sig Sauer P250compact, Beretta PX4 Storm, Smith & Wesson M&P9 or 9VE Pistol-Allied Forces model, Walther P99 or PPS. I looked at the Glocks but not a big fan of them (might change if I look at one in person though). Let me know if any of you have these or have shot them and how you liked them. Thanks and congrats on the new rifle a_tack, can't wait to see pics.

I'm still getting the handgun as well.. just ran across a good deal on the rifle... You should really look at glocks.. they are indestructable..lol Also don't overlook the taurus millenium pro in a 9mm.. regardless of what anyone says, Taurus DOES make good handguns, or else they would not still be in business. Taurus got a bad rep for putting out a few crappy ones in their earlier years, but now they are in the ranks with Glock and S&W... you will find most people who bash Taurus have not actually ever held, much less fired one..lol They are simply going on heresay. I am telling you, from years of exp. firing a wide variety of weapons that taurus does make a good inexpensive handgun.... Now to explain the rifle... The guy I bought it off of bought it new last year. Never used it... It is a Remington Model 700 BDL 7mm Mag. All-in-all he has approximately $1040.00 in it! I traded him a hi-point .45auto (about $155) and $250 cash (total $405).............. Couldn't Pass it up..... I wanted a 7mm Mag because I can hunt deer as well as elk with it and there is a possibility of a black bear season in Kentucky's near future!!! Now for the pics.... sorry for blurry pics.. camera battery is dying and it doesnt wanna focus well..
