So, I have never asked this question on here before. I am an avid gun owner/hunting and shooting enthusiast. How many others are there on bf.com that do the same? If there are any, then maybe you can help me solve my dilemma....

It is time for me to get my concealed weapons permit. I currently own a cheap 9mm, a cheap 45 auto, and my 1911 Gov't model 45...as shown below...

I have found that this full size auto is kinda hard to conceal, so I am going to buy a new handgun. My choices are as follows:

A Stainless Steel Taurus Model 85 .38 Special

OR

A Springfield XD .40

OR

A Springfield 1911 EMP .40

OR

I am open to any suggestions $450 or less..lol

Out of those I like the Springfield XD .40.  What all do you have to do to obtain your license to carry concealed?  I'm looking at doing the same in PA.

I don't own any hand guns, but have a few shot guns and some rifles for hunting.

I like a larger gun so none of those listed would be my preference if I were to be searching for a hand gun...  Too short of a barrel to be accurate at anything but the shortest of distances.  But as TBB said, if I had to choose, it would be the XD .40

My old boss is really into handgun competitions so I'll have to ask him what he would recommend when he gets back from vacation (2 weeks...).  His preference is on the high end guns though...

In Kentucky you have to undergo a state and federal background check, must be 21, must complete a state course on gun safety/gun laws/what is considered legal use of lethal force, you must pass a shooting accuracy test, and pay for the permit. I take my guns very seriously. I always follow all of the gun safety rules. And I take my concealed carry permit very seriously. I don't want anyone to know I am carrying a gun, this just causes trouble. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Just remember that this is a serious permit. Your state is training you to make the decision wether or not to end someones life. It is no joke. (not saying you think this, but I have several friends who would wave it around to look tough and it pisses me off... I yell at them constantly.. its people like them that give responsible gun owners bad names..)

Get on your State Police website. The info for your state's concealed carry permit should be there, they are the ones that issue the permit.

Kyle, my 1911 A1 Mil-spec books for over $900... it is a 5" barrel, you would love it... that is a stock photo, mine has Black rubber Pachmyer wrap around grips

Really the main reason I would even remotely THINK about getting a license to carry concealed would be if I were ever in a situation similar to VA Tech.  It would most likely stay in my truck for the majority of the time.  I definitely take it seriously and definitely wouldn't be waving it around.  Kind of defeats the purpose of 'concealed'.  From what I have read on PA's website, you have to be a constable or equivalent to carry concealed.  Others on the forum have mentioned they have gotten there's by saying they escort VIP's.  Thanks for the info on how to get one in your state.

What about baby eagles? I have a .40 cal with the 4.5 in barrel and absolutely love it. I have never had a single problem with it and I have put quite a few rounds through it.

Magnum Research (Baby Eagle)

They show on their specs page that they do make some with as low as 3.64 in barrels.

It also says that there suggested msrp is $569 or so. I got mine for $450 plus tax which brought it up to about $500.

Having a bit of experience with this subject, of your listed choices, I would go with the Springfield 1911 EMO .40. That said, I would prefer to carry this Para-Ordnance .45.

I have an XD 45 and i love it, excellent accuracy i also have a Colt 45 but i'd rather use the XD 45 in a situation. I wouldn't go with the taurus (not a big fan) but you cannot go wrong with the XD. BTW dont get an eagle if you are thinking of it their rubbish. My dad has two and they both welded themsevles shut cause of heat.

Clint, did you know that Canada is where the Para-Ordnance handguns are made?

Im looking at a new 1911.  I like Kimber the most. The one I decided on is a Stainless model and is around 800.  In a 1911 I wouldnt consider anything but a Kimber, their quality is far above any other gun out there.

For 450 I would get a Glock, they are around 500 for the ones I have been looking at for concealment purposes.  They are decent guns too.

Whoa there! You need to be more specific. Are you talking about a full size eagle with the .50 cal? Because I have only ever heard of those breaking recoil springs because of the kick. And I know for certain that baby eagles don't have issues with off the shelf ammo having owned 2 myself (both in .40 cal). With proper maintenance an eagle should last you forever. Perhaps your father does his own reloads and made them too hot? Or possibly put them together wrong getting them jammed up and making it seem as though they "welded" together?

Hate to say it, but calling a Desert Eagle rubbish seems kind of ignorant to me.
