MDF thickness and sound.... - 3/16/2008 10:36:13 PM    dbleon Posts: 319 Joined: 8/31/2007 Status: offline I've noticed on my last few box builds that if i use a double MDF face (double 3/4"), it ends up sounding different than single face. Am I hallucinating or does the thickness of the MDf actually change the sound? Anyone with experience please chime in. Post #: 1

MDF typically has a density of 600-800 kg/m³. I haven't seen double MDF, but have seen HDF (high density) which is 600-1450 kg/m³. Is the double sided a sandwiched laminate? RE: MDF thickness and sound.... - 3/18/2008 4:42:57 PM    cloak01ls Posts: 435 Joined: 10/27/2007 Status: offline Usually 1" or doubled up 3/4" MDF is used on enclosures that house very powerful subwoofers that have the ability to flex the wood which can in turn create negative pressure resulting in loss of sound...Insternal bracing is something that is also used to aid in the correction of this problem. Think of it as mounting a piece of paper vs. mounting the same speaker to a piece of thick cardboard. One is obviously easier to bend. (in reply to cloak01ls) Post #: 7

Try putting a piece on top of another, then putting a good shopvac to the top one. Even at 3/4" you can usually still pick up the bottom piece.
