K&N or AEM???

djbass_mekanik -> K&N or AEM??? (2/8/2006 1:33:43 AM)

What Intake Do YOU Think Is Better?? I Am Goin To Get One Of The 2.. Respect To Those W/ Their Stock Or " ebay" Intakes, But I Read Enough Of Them, So Please Dont Post On Them.. Just AEM or K&N...
* i heard that the K&N is better because of the plastic tube.. it absorbs less heat than aluminum or metal intakes, is that true?? thanks

RedBlaze -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/8/2006 4:14:28 PM)

I think that they are pretty much about the same. I would go with K&N just because they are more well known. I dont think you would be able to tell a difference either way though.

I installed a K&N because the cleaning kits are easily available. Next time I'm going to try True Flow.

It's depends on the setup. My K&N FIPK gets quite warm under the hood on a hot day.

if you go to aem website aempower.com they will so the results on the dyno. i called them personally and they guaranteed there's was better than k&n and other manufacures. take it for what you will, but I bought the brute force and noticed a difference in obvious sound and the passing gear.

strongboy2005 -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/9/2006 3:37:01 PM)

The AEM boasts a dyno-proven 4 HP more than the K&N FIPK... Is this just marketing or is the AEM that much better than the FIPK?

swartlkk -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/9/2006 4:06:15 PM)

Well, I don't have anything against either of them and am sure that they both will serve you well. Here's my take on the whole thing. The aluminum, having a greater thermal conductivity between the two, will stay cooler to the touch. The problem with that is that it will transmit more heat to the air and the air is effectively cooling it off. Now, does the aluminum intake heat up the air more than a plastic one? Who knows. When you get right down to it, it has to deal with the internal surface area and surface finish to determine how much heat can be transmitted into the air. Just the fact that you are getting away from the accordian tubes and into a smooth walled pipe is a benefit. By switching to silicone couplers and steel/aluminum pipe where the rubber accordian tubes are on the current intake would net gains even with the stock box.

strongboy2005 -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/9/2006 4:32:41 PM)

But do you think the AEM actually produces more power than the K&N? I can get the K&N for about 150, but the AEM is about 200... But if it's making 4 HP more than the K&N then it would be worth it...

Does the AEM shield the filter from the heat as well as the K&N does?

djbass_mekanik -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/10/2006 2:16:57 AM)

Well I Think Im Goin With AEM.. But After I Finish My System.. But After Taht I Want To Lower Mine.. U Think I Shud Jus Do Tha Intake Rite Now?? Or Can It Wait??

TruckeeT2 -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/10/2006 11:15:17 AM)

K&N!!!!!

strongboy2005 -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/10/2006 1:03:52 PM)

I was looking more at both sets and I really think I like the AEM better... They have dry filters (won't mess up mass airflow sensor), as opposed to K&N's oiled filters, plus they claim a higher HP gain (comparing both dynos)...

strongboy2005 -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/13/2006 7:09:35 PM)

Bought the FIPK on ebay (got a good deal)... So i'll be letting you guys know how it goes...

zero psi -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/14/2006 7:00:15 PM)

if you're worried about heat in the intake tube, DEI makes a heat reflective wrap that will fit over the FIPK tube.

i was thinkin of that... but as i said b4, im goin w/ the AEM.. but not till i finish my system, then lowering...

Is it really that big of an issue? I thought the issue was actually pulling in hot air... I would think that because the cold air only flows through the piping for a split second it shouldn't really heat up...

Bgray -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (2/16/2006 10:56:17 AM)

IVe got a FIPK...Works good...gives a sound. Thats about it. Dont expect to get any real results with an intake. Maybe a tiny bit in higher end of the gears(mine did, in my 5 speed blazer). Either would ahve been a good choice, really jsut comes down to preffernce

2klt -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (3/11/2006 6:03:12 PM)

Instead of a outside wrap or the like, how about a plastic liner for the aluminum with a thin asbestos separator between the two. A bit elaborate I am sure but the heat transfer would be cut way down thinking with my gray matter anyway.... Course there is probably some reason that it would nt be feasible.
anybody have any thoughts on this. It would be easy enough to set up a proto just to see the basics.

2001blazer -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (3/17/2006 12:22:05 AM)

ok so my friend is tryin to make a cold air intake right now everything is made out of some type of metal/aluminum and w/e else but what about makin one out of pvc it would obviously be light and then just throwing a k&n filter on the end i mean im a k&n guy thats y i say that but do u think this would work...hes makin it for his 96 3 series its a 2 dr

4lowlife -> RE: K&N or AEM??? (3/17/2006 12:32:31 AM)

Fo sho! I have this on my Impala. clickety. After it arrived, I realized someone cut up aluminum, bent it up, and threw a few things in it and marketed it.

I had to purchase a 9" K&n cone seperately.

What about the gas mileage?
