I have a '01 4 door and i read on here that the infinity 6412cfp plate speakers will fit into the dash openings. They do, got them to fit no prob, but they seem really strained and pop and sound terrible. Does anyone know anything about this? help!

They may be over powered or underpowered from what it sounds like! I have 4x6 plate speakers in mine they are blaupunkt <- spelling, and they work just fine with no amp or extra power pushing them. So I am thinking overpowered or underpowered im not a 100% sure of which!!

They are just powered by the stock unit, all i had done was just switched the speakers, got the crossover out of course, but thats all. It just doesn't make sense to me that it would be over-powered.

Yea then I would say they are underpowered maybe? What do you have as your settings for bass and treble??? If the bass is up to high that can cause popping and distortion!!

I'm sure it is the bass response, it's really bad when it's on the "rock setting" i think it's when the bass is 3/4 the way up. The treble sounds fine, but for it to not pop there has to be very little bass.

Also to test them to see if they could handle it, i plugged them into the rear slots to see if they would pop. They are fine in the back, it's just the dash spots. Like they are outputting more than the other spots it seems like.

It had a crossover for the tweeters, i took it out the first time.

I tried the plate speakers again with the crossover from the original tweeters, it took out too much of the bass and made tweeter sound good, but no signal to the woofer.

i have a 98 with the stock component setup ( 6.5" midbass in the door and a small 1" tweeter in the dash).  i replaced the speakers in the doors with some cheap pioneer ones a few years ago and i replaced the speakers in the dash (with infinity 6412's) about 3 months ago... however, i did NOT take any crossover out i just snipped the wires at the stock tweeter and soldered them to the new 4x6 plates.

keep in mind though, a 3" driver isnt going to have a very good bass response. more power might give them a little better bass but the frequency response is only 72-21kHz.

Yeah, I guess a better question is why do they work perfect in the back doors and not on the dash. Thats whats been tripping me up.

your mounting baffle in the dash could be what is making the horrible noises.

I think that more of the recorded bass signal is sent to the front speakers hence the rear setup won't "pop". Turn down the bass and get a crossover on the plates. Use the 6.5" door speakers for bass re-enforcement.

From what I've looked at on my 99 4 door, the stock rear speakers are 9.5 ohm, with the front door speakers at 4 ohm. That leads me to believe that the tweeter in the dash is 4 ohm, and is wired in series with the door to acheive ~8 ohm.

In the rear, your 4x6 plate would be running at 4 ohms of resistance(assuming they are 4 ohm rated plate speakers), which would be more power than it would recieve in a ~8 ohm system up front(assuming you also have a 4 ohm woofer/speaker in the front door).

I've got 2 polk audio 6.5"s in my rear doors that sound great, but if I put them in my front doors they sound weak, and empty of bass. This is a result of what I'm guessing is 2 speakers wired in series up front.

If you wire them in parallel, on the other hand, you would be placing the front half under a ~2 ohm load and they would probably sound great, maybe even overpowered. Your head unit might not like the 2 ohm load, though, especially if it's the stocker that's used to 4 times that much resistance.

That make a lot of sense!

I Actually have infinity 6.5'' 2-ohm in the front doors. So if they are run in series that would send too much power to the dash right? because the dash are 4-ohm?

The dash speakers would be slightly underpowered, because once the power reaches the dash speakers you already have a 2 ohm load on the head unit. The front would be running at 6 ohms.

If you get a 2 ohm dash speaker, then the complete front half would be running at 4 ohms. If you have 4 ohm rear door speaks, then in theory the system would sound balanced.

I haven't removed the door panels or dash, so I was hoping someone could shed some light on how the speakers are wired in the front.  Basically, I am waffling between components and coax speakers for the front.  The choice is going to depend on how the tweeter wiring is run.

Where is the crossover?  Do the dash tweeters run directly to the radio or do they run from the door speakers?
