blazer's off-road ability

Blazer man1998 -> blazer's off-road ability (3/29/2008 5:25:46 PM)

Hey guys, i was jsut wondering what kind of off-road ability a stock blazer has.  I know that i have been through some nasty snow and was very impressed! howevor i have not been through any mud and was just wondering how well they fair.  i would suspect pretty well, since so many off you all have been off road.  do they compare to jeeps?

I don't do off roading trips just to offroad, but my Bravada did very well getting out to my tree stands, crossing small creeks, as well as getting back to where I shot my deer two years ago.  Worked quite well!  My Rainier gets through the same stuff.  Its a bit better in the mud though with the wider tires and better ground clearance (stock for stock).

nothing compares to a blazer  jeeps are nuttin but heeps.

I know blazers are good offroad, they have very even weight distribution that helps considerably with 4wd.

However...regarding jeeps:

Then why is a SFA swap so amazing with the blazer community?  Jeeps already have em...and the Dana 30s and 60s we love?  Jeeps.  Jeeps are tried and proven offroad, but they have their drawbacks.  Mostly for me it's interior comfort, and on-road manners are the low points of a jeep.  Also, everyone you see out on the trails has a jeep, when you beat em up a trail in a Blazer, the looks on their faces are priceless [:)]

As for your question though, Blazers need a little bit of modification to compare to a jeep out of the box.  But I feel with a minor lift to clear some bigger/better tires, they'll take a jeep on most trails [:D]

Agreed with what has been said above. I actually went out on a stock truck run last year with a group of 4x4's from my school. I ended up having the most stock truck and made it through the same stuff and more without getting stuck, the guys in the jeeps and lifted fullsize trucks were impressed with the abilities of the stock blazer with worn highway allseasons. Now I have slightly larger BFG AT's and have yet to put it to the test off road, but once the snow melts I will be out there trying it out.

Does great off-road.

Stay away from deep water.

Don't go any deeper than the bumper.

Trust me.

WolfPack -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 2:23:30 PM)

Question on that:

I was reading in a Land Rover hand book for offroad driving (quite a good read if anyones interested) and it said whenever attempting a water crossing you have to keep moving and at a constant speed.  Something about how the water flows around and under the truck, and the air in the engine bay remains relatively calm, but once you stop or slow down too much the water backs up and you flood.  It also mentioned that water entrys are the most dangerous part (makes sense...the nose dives mostly).  Any thought's on the technique for a deep water crossing?

I just avoid the ponds myself, but this is good knowledge to have! [:D]

drperry -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 2:26:37 PM)

I did good until I found a hole in the river, and the water was suddently over the drivers corner of my hood... [:D]

On the plus side, as long as you don't stop, you don't get water inside...

At least, I didn't.

My Jeep would kill my blazer off road.... but the blazer does extremely well for a 4 door suv..lol I love my blazer...

willjones -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 6:12:22 PM)

I loved my jeep, but like previously stated I hated driving it on the road. Very unstable and if you think that we get bad gas mileage, then take a long trip in a wrangler on 32s.

drperry -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 6:13:55 PM)

The whole flat thing isn't good for gas mileage... H2's get like 9 - 12MPG on the highway... Not towing :p

fla_blazer4x4 -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 6:28:10 PM)

well if your taking bout hummers that different anyone seen the video on youtube of the hummer with the jeeps the hummers axle snaped. pretty funny cuz jeeps go throw it like butter just pasing the hummer

i use to like jeep like the grand cherreke that was the 1st car i wanted yes they do look nice lifted with 33's but from past family ownership on everyone the tranmisson droped, and abounch of other crap with them thats why my stepdad kinda got me away from them, if anyone been on yotatech.com its the toyota forums they dislike the jeeps alot.

i just personally would rather have a blazer then a jeep and propply a ford before jeep and i kinda am ashamed becouse i like the solid axle the jeeps have and i really dislike ford alot but  its just what i would rather have

drperry -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 6:30:56 PM)

95% of that Hummer breaking was the idiot driver, lol.

Blazer man1998 -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 7:27:12 PM)

hey guys thanks for all the great feedback.  so sounds like the blazers are pretty good off-road, but not quite a jeep, but close.  good to know!

a_tack -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/30/2008 8:04:40 PM)

fla_blazer4x4, my jeep was an older model.... one still made by AMC before Dodge took over well technically diamler-chrysler...... the older Full size jeeps (like my J-10) were sweet... I wouldn't have a new one...

fla_blazer4x4 -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/31/2008 6:19:51 AM)

o got you, yea i think when chrysler took over its more toward looks cuz everytime a jeep/dodge comercoul comes on they just talk about the powertran warrity and its sleek design. and how much room it has, i just think trucks/cars arent really built like they use to back in the day like the old z71 are so much nicer then the new ones out,

dopezr2 -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/31/2008 6:47:22 PM)

i have a BLAZER ZR2 and its got 12k miles and it goes through alot and is real tough but with ifs they are not as good as a jeep wrangler or cherokke with the same amount of lift

Tippman7641 -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/31/2008 8:02:07 PM)

lwill only call an h1 a real hummer, and they would dominate almost every truck out their stock if not all, the h2s are big ass suvs, they cant even make it over a 3 foot snow bank

WolfPack -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/31/2008 8:18:09 PM)

I love it when opinion blinds fact.

H2s might not be worth $50,000 in offroading ability, but a stock H2 compared to any other production model suv...and the H2 will outpreform.  The video with the inexperienced driver was originally posted to show the H2s notorious poorly-designed tie rods.

And do you realize how rediculous that is...it can't make it over a 3 foot snow bank?  It can climb over 30'' vertical wall, I'm pretty sure a snow bank wouldn't be much trouble.

Tippman7641 -> RE: blazer's off-road ability (3/31/2008 8:30:29 PM)

im just saying i believe h1's are by far the best off roader ever made stock ( i mean the high end models the ones with inflating/deflating tires, etc) not saying h2s are nessary bad, but im saying i dont believe they live up to the hummer name, i watch an entire show on the history channel i thinkl about them, they can climb up to 60 degree slopes
