Owner/Operator truckers across the country have shut down their trucks to protest the high costs of diesel and low freight pay, with thousands more threatening. I don't watch TV but I have been following it via internet....anyone have any thoughts? Pros and cons?

My thoughts....
Pros - Something has to be done, everyone is struggling here due to high fuel prices...it seems like ceasing the movement of freight is a pretty good place to start. After all, everyone has to eat, right?
Cons - The cost of EVERYTHING is going to skyrocket for a while, making it that much harder for those of us that are living paycheck to paycheck and struggling just to get by.

Simple economics.  Uneducated truckers thinking they can effect the market price of an inelastic good by adjusting demand.  Or maybe they think they can leverage the other goods they are trucking to get us to change demand of gas.  Either way..it's still an inelastic good.

Not going to do anything but make everyone's lives more difficult, cause a panic, and drive the cost of gas up even more.  Thanks fellas.

I've seen it done twice that I cared enough about to remember - no effect. What the indies don't haul, the corporate lines will. In an open market there's always somebody to step in and take your place.

It's like a group of farmers not taking their peaches to a farmers market.  Another farmers just going to bring more peaches.  Or people will shop at Harris Teeter.

Uninformed Action ftl

This probably won't do a thing.  I can understand why their doing this though.  $4.00 fuel x 100 gal tanks= $400 dollars a day just to drive the trucks.  Those aren't even the larger tanks that alot of the over-the-road truck have more like 150 gal tanks.  So lets see here is costs more to drive the truck and the truck isn't making much more money than it did while fuel prices were low.   Yes someone will step in and cover the loads that aren't being hauled.  Still people have started to notice.

And you can thank the EPA for outragously high diesel prices...

if they havent unionized yet they probably will now.  I mean they should.. less pushing around.  High prices for diesel is bullcrap when it costs more to refine gasoline...

I think its just another sign of the economy getting closer to depression, didn't want to say it but if you think about it, if a trucker can't afford the gas in his rig and another person jumps into take his place how long before the next guy can't afford the gas?? I am not saying that by them protesting will dramatically change anything but it might have a possible impact on things.

An independent truckers strike will do no good.  Sure diesel (and gas) are skyrocketing, but what group can collectively do anything about it?  The over all population is still going to pay the higher price (just complain louder).  The only way to get the cost of fuel down is to drill more in our own country, and the "tree huggers" won't allow it.  I haven't researched it that much, but Alaska seems like the way to go to me.  And as others have said, there will always be the next guy willing to step in and haul the load.  Sorry so wordy.

Im for it. Atleast around here the independent lines have trouble paying for fuel. What else are they going to do?

The Gulf of Mexico has more oil underneath it's sands than all of Saudi Arabia.  The only problem is the Gulf is tagged as a 'strategic reserve' and will only be tapped when the other options are at risk.  Alaska is petty close I'm sure, I just havn't seen a figure on it.   Hippies..

Thankfully, we're still only approaching the indicators of recession.  Recession is just a slowing in production and purchasing nationwide and an increase in cyclical unemployment.  A depression is a rediculous amount of over supply with close to no demand from consumers for products across the board.  Depression conditions are usually motivated by consumer fear...so don't talk about a depression!

So if you wanna help the situation, go out and spend more money!!!!  On things like gas

Yes, the last 'depression' we had was in the 1930's when national unemployment was at 25%! The figure for February this year was 4.8%, so 'depression' is not even in the cards.

See i like to thank that we haven't tapped our own oil fields in US (especially Alaska) because we are waiting for everyone else to run out/low. Once this happens America would have a monopoly on oil hence charging whatever the hell they want to... (just another in a long list of conspiracy theories)

in my humble opinion we haven't recovered from the last one, just slowly over time made it worse.  So in my opinion, we are still in a depression from 1930's and keep adding on to it.

Thank the federal reserve for this mess.

we can also thank OPEC for these rising fuel costs. When OPEC wants to raise the price of crude oil, it just reduces production. The oil companies just pass the savings on to you! I hope we start tapping into ANWR soon, even if we  have to drill through the side bambi's skull.

ya i dont think an entire depression will happen but a small part of the lower class and even lower mid class might go into one. but ya gas prices will continue to increase untill they completely kill the economy. hopefully we'll be able to survive until then.

Nah...If you think something like the price of gas will take down an economy..

Look at places like London.  Gas is around $9-10/gallon and their functioning just fine, if not better than the US economy.  All the higher prices will do is force alternatives to become more mainstream.  Different transportation, new technology, etc.

If you think about the majority of consumers as blind sheep that are simply motivated by pricing, you'll see it's pretty clear that gas prices won't take down the economy.

the 1929 depression was caused by a downturn after the roaring '20s when returning war vets and war-effected people went on a spending spree.  Eventually the credit and lack of investing caught up, and people withdrew money in mass amounts, killing banks, credit lines, etc.  Consumer fear caused all this to tumble out of control...more people withdrew money and stop spending what they had= depression.

The only reason these guys went on strike was because they were feeling the squeeze of high prices, couldn't figure anything else out, and so they decide to strike.

Ignorance ftl
