Body or Suspension?

bigt7088 -> Body or Suspension? (4/3/2008 11:56:53 PM)

Hey guys! I've got a 2000 4x4 4dr that I'm wanting to put a lift on. I've been looking into getting a 2 inch susp, but I've heard this can potentially mess up the geometry with shafts and etc. But other than looks and avoiding body damage, I don't see any benefits of a body lift. I already ripped the tailpipe off from getting stuck on a steep hill. I guess my question is how often to 2 inch suspension lifts give problems for people? And do body lifts offer a lot more for off roading capabilities than I'm thinking? This vehicle is still gonna be the vehicle I get back and forth to college with... Thanks!

From what I understand the body lift is just for looks ( correct me if im wrong ).  And the suspension is what you would want if u are offroading and wanting clearance.  Ive decided for mine to just lift by cranking the torsion bars and putting shackles in the ass end.

body lift gets you 2" of the frame which allows for larger tires, which will give you .5-1.5" more ground clearence than stock.

it will give you .5" more ground clearance... only way you can get 1.5" more ground clearance with a body lift alone is to run 33's... to run 33's, you would pretty much have to remove the fenders on a 2nd gen. On a 1st gen you get a 3"BL and trim the fenders to clear 33's...
no possible way you are getting 1.5" more ground clearance off of just a body lift. At least no logical or reasonable way.

APPROACH ANGLES.

lol j/k.

I did the 2'' suspension thing....and will be doing the 2'' body lift as well..I think it looks great.  And usually 4x4s want wheel well space...stuffing the wells is for baggers..

i did a trailmaster 5in suspension trailmaster 2in body lift and put on 33in tires and it looks good and rides just fine

good lookin truck! wish I had the extra $$$ to do that

I really appreciate the input. A torsion bar lift concerns me of breaking a joint when I'm driving to school (an hour drive). (and for WolfPack, did I read somewhere that 70 miles after your 2 inch lift, your CV went out?) Also, it seems the like the 6 inch may be a little too complex for me to do. Maybe I  should just keep my Blazer for commuting only and save up for a more authentic off road vehicle... what do you guys think? Thanks!

tjwiens91@hotmail.co -> RE: Body or Suspension? (4/7/2008 2:02:22 PM)

well you can still get a lift, an be fine. Im going to be getting a 2" suspension from RC an it is my daily driver.

willjones -> RE: Body or Suspension? (4/7/2008 3:05:32 PM)

Or just do a slight tb crank and get a bodylift as well to get plenty of room for the bigger tires. Thats what I am doing. And if 1.5 inches of clearance is whats holding you back from just doing a bodylift, then thats rediculous. Of all the times I have been stuck another 1 inch of clearance wasn't going to make things any better. The bigger tires make the diff.

WolfPack -> RE: Body or Suspension? (4/7/2008 4:08:40 PM)

In all the threads I mentioned the CV going out, I was sure to mention that I have 100k on the CVs before cranking.  I have had no problems since!  I would say go ahead and do it.  Going up ~2'' is just what a blazer needs IMO [:D].   Makes it the right height for an SUV

An update for those maybe wondering, I'm planning on going with the BDS 5 inch lift. I'm in college right now, but funds are running short. I've got a tough major that requires a lot of attention to school and not working. So I'm taking a year off to work at a place that starts at $60,000 a year, working 84 hour weeks though. So after a year, I should have enough money to pay for my expenses until I graduate. Also gives me plenty of money to customize my blazer. I'm going to get my uncle, who is a mechanic, to help me install the BDS lift. Torsion bar cranking just doesn't appeal to me for some reason. Anybody have any experience with the BDS lift?

this guy has the 5in bds on his blazer
i know its a little late but i thought i would give you some info anyway
wish i had the mulahh to get one, instead im getting the 2 in bds bl
oh and 31 inch tires will give you approx. 1in of frame lift
stock tires are around 28 inches
if you get 30''s they will give you 1 inches of frame lift
the diameter is around 2 inches larger, so the radius would be half that
giving you a total of 1 inch frame, 3 inches total (if installing 2 inch bl)
plus if you crank the t bars 1 inch and put 1 inch shackles on, then your up to 4 inches total lift
30'' tires(1in)+2" BL(2in)+tbars and shackles(1in)=4 total inces from stock height
2 inches frame, 2 inches body
hope i helped
-steven
