So I have a 1996 4x4 blazer. My transmissin fluid had ran pretty low so my friend said as a precaution we should replace the tranny filter. So we did that. However, after that I was driving and my engine light came on again (came on the first time to warn me about the low oil). Sat it out on the pad for a few days and noticed a substantial leak from the transmission. My question is, I had a friend look at it and he deduced it was a front seal leak since the leak seemed to be coming from the bellhousing. After calling around, it sounds like a front seal replacement is going to run me anywhere from 500-900 dollars. Does this sound like the issue or could it be something else less expensive hopefully? Any help is very appreciated since I'm not very mechanically savvy. Thanks in advance.

If it is your front tranny seal the oil leak will be inside the bellhousing. If the inside of the bellhousing is clean, its not leaking tranny fluid from the front seal. It could e coming from teh tranny dipstick tube, which sits on top of the tranny right behind the bellhousing and could be confused with a front seal leak.

the front seal is a $5 part. Its the labor to remove thet tranny thats the expensive part.

Okay well my understanding is that the leak is coming *from* the bellhousing. Like I've said, I'm not very savvy with cars but it seems like you're saying if it was the front seal it would be internal and I wouldn't see the leak correct?

Negative.

I could be coming from inside the belhousing. That is not an internal leak. Its a pain in the butt leak and very expensive if you pay someone else to fix it. If you fix it yourself your out $5 for the part.
