My older bro drives a little pickup,  basic everything, including the 5-speed manual tranny.  It's a Mazda B2500 (identical to a ford ranger).  Only 50k miles if that.  Problem is there is quite a squeak/squeal whenever you let the clutch out in 1st or 2nd.   It's almost a sound like the clutch pedal needs lube, but it's definitely a tranny/clutch sound, not engine or pedal (I suppose it could be engine, but it sounds like it originates further back than the engine bay...tranny-far back).

Problem is I just don't know enough about the workings of a standard tranny to have any idea what to look for.  My first thought was the clutch is going out...but with only 50k miles, and the fact that it has no problems going into or holding gears, I don't think it's the entire clutch.  Is the clutch plate greasable or lube-able?  Is there a cable that moves the clutch or is it electronic?  Could the clutch actually be going out?!

Thanks for the help guys!  Hopefully I can get it fixed this week, 'cause my older bro is vehicle disinclined, but remains firm that there is no problem what-so-ever...and he's out of town this week!

if its not slipping then the clutch shouldnt be going. or a storng burning clutch smell will tell you if it is going. if its squealing then it is possible it might me the throwout bearing is going. i never had the problem with my s10 but that is what it sounds like from your description.  but it is hard to tell without hearing it or driving it. and I dont believe there is any way to lube a cluth that i have ever heard of.  and the clutch is moved by hidraulics there is a resevior that holds clutch fluid and when the pedal is pushed in it pushes fluid to the clutch rod that disengages the clutch. make sure there is sufficient fluid in the fluid resevior it should be next to the brake fluid resevior.

I'll check that thank you!  Also one of my neighbors was talking about a test to see if the clutch is good or not...you put the front end up against a solid wall..and put it in gear, then drop the clutch out, and it should stall immediately if the clutch is good?  Anyone heard of this?  If that's a real 'test'...why wouldn't the parking brake work just as well...I feel like the wall is a chance for damage..

Yeah, just hold the brake and let the clutch out... No need for a wall...

If buddy had to use the wall, he's been neglecting his brakes...

What year of Mazda pickup?

The 1991 style were NOT Ford Ranger clones... That started in 1994, I believe...

I'm thinking it's the pre-ranger one, as my old Mazda had the same kind of noise... I just ignored it, lol
It's not the clutch itself... Unless the clutch gets ridden.

Check the clutch fluid, and also check the slave cylinder for the clutch (the one that actually moves the clutch) as mine blew out on me... And just for fun... get some silicone lube and spray down the pedal, lol.

Its a 99 Mazda...Haha it's even complete with an identical dash to my dad's 2000 Explorer.

And the clutch has seen some use..I learned to drive on it, as did my older bro, and my mom's driven it a few times (last time she drove a manual was in the early 80s..)

While I'm greasing the pedal Is there anything else in the clutch linkage setup that could be greased?  Cable/arms or anything?

Okay, then yes, it's definitely a Ranger clone (or the Ranger is a Mazda clone, wichever way you want to look at it, lol)

Look for any movable parts, lol, give 'em a shot, and double check for any leakage before you spray...
