3.42 2 series ring and pinion

As some of you already know I was misinformed about the posi that I purchased and it is indeed a 2 series carrier instead of the 3 series that it was described as.

Therefore I need 3.42 gears that will fit in a 2 series carrier (also known as a 'thick' ring gear) because I don't want to go the spacer route.

Let me know if you have anything or where to find some that won't break the bank.

PN for the 3.42 S2 gear set is 49-0005-1.  You are not going to like the price though...  ~$225 for the ring/pinion set.  Anytime you replace one gear, you need to replace the others as they wear to each other.

Does anyone know what originally came with 3.42's for a 2 series?  I'm thinking Camaro/Firebird.  How about an option code so I can possibly call junkyards?

EDIT: I'm an idiot and I have a summit catalog sitting right next to me.

3.42's that will fit in a 3.08 and lower carrier.
3.42's that will fit in a 3.23 and higher carrier.

I want the ones that will fit in a 3.08 and lower carrier, correct?  3.08=2 series, no?  I will contact Summit ASAP, but do you think the new ring and pinion comes with new ring gear bolts?

Da bump to make sure I'm covering my bases here since some of you are far superior in your mechanical knowledge than I am.

About to order from Summit:

3.42's that use a 3.08 and lower carrier (I called today to verify that this will work for a series 2 carrier)

Ring and pinion installation kit from Ratech.  This includes ring gear bolts.  Now even though the ring gear is 'thicker', the same size bolts are used?

Anything else I will need?

Sorry to spread this out over a few threads, I'll link to all of them in my original thread "Which is cheaper?" when I get this all figured out.

Sounds like everything.  You'll need a set of vernier calipers for measuring the shims, a torque wrench, a dial indicator with a magnetic or screw on base, and the proper preload for the carrier bearings.  If you can measure the over all length of the two carriers and take the difference, you'll know how many more/less side shims you'll need for the appropriate side preload on the carrier bearings.

Last time I looked, I couldn't find the side preload procedure though.

DANG Summit is quick!  Got parts today and am one step closer to having my truck on the road again!

Is that stronger than the series 3?  Those teeth on the right look a little beefier than the series 3 ring gear teeth

Looks to be quite a bit stronger judging by the angle and the width of the teeth.
