that sucks.....the cops where i live are kind of like that but they are starting to relax on things like window tint, there's just too many cars for them to pull over for illegal tint, so the just look the other way.

Wrong palce at the wrong time. It's a non-moving violation right, if so it shouldn't mess with your insurance.

Holy crap was that post PAINFUL to read... Is there any local or state laws stating that you have to have your exhaust exiting out from under the vehicle? If there is, that is why he pulled you over. Regardless of how dumb the law, he's just doing his job.

BTW they shine the spotlight in your mirror so that you can't see. That is the point of it. Also it helps illuminate the interior of your vehicle so that they can see better when they are approaching your vehicle. They don't do it to be a pain. They arer taught to do that.

I know it isn't a problem around me, but if you are near more 'rough' neighbor hoods, many cops do that so that you cannot see where they are as they approach and keep it on you while they are talking to you so that they can make sure that you are not going to pull a gun on them. It gives them the extra time necessary to get out of the way. I believe this is something that they are instructed to do. You might have just found a rookie that does everything to a 'T'.

When i got pulled over (didn't get a ticket) it was for laughing at another guy for getting pulled over, lol so.. it was a porshe and i think i had a right to laugh, he pulled me over and said it was for driving with my parking permit on the rear view miror. I didn't turn off the car, give him my registration, or insurance, just handed him my license. but at the end he was like, "its not so funny when it happenends to you is it?". He wasn't mean or a bad cop or anything, i think he thought i was just one of those assholes laughing at someone else so he was gona teach me a lesson. I was still pissed off the whole day lol

I have power mirrors. Whenever I get pulled over I just adjust the mirror so that it is looking at the ground. Don't just reach out the window and manually adjust anything. I don't think they will like that.

You think you have it bad. Where I am going to school we got University of Wyoming, Wyotech, and the community college and the cops here look for out of state plates like no other and will pull you over for going 5 over, and will try and find something to pull you over for

ORIGINAL: swartlkk Holy crap was that post PAINFUL to read... x2 lol, but as for the light inthe mirror im sure its for their own protection so they can see who all is in the vehicle and any movements in the vehicle. sorry to hear you got a ticket for your exhaust, sucks, ive never had a ticket for loud exhaust and my cutlass has a big hole inthe manifold so it sounds like a blown v8! lol never had a problem with cops, the cop that pulled you over was probly trying to fill his quota for the month, most cops like to knock out the quota early in the month.

Encounters with cops are not usually fun for you, or for them. They shine the spotlight in your rearview and pull in behind you at an offset to hit your passenger side mirror not so much to see your silhouette as to keep you from seeing them clearly when they approach the vehicle. They're taught to do that because traffic stops are among the most dangerous things a cop can do. They will readily admit this if asked. Anyhow, your citation should show the appropriate law which the officer claims you violated. You should at least go find the current version of that law online so you can see what actually constitutes a violation. It would suck to "fix" something, take it for inspection, and find out that you haven't addressed the actual violation. One common "muffler" related offense is the sound limits. If that's what the code relates to, see if you can find a friendly cop, tell him you tightened some things up to lower the sound level and ask him to tell you if that's fixed (assuming you think it's within legal tolerances after your own measurements). If he agrees, he might sign off--without any modifications. You can always try fighting it, if you're convinced you did nothing wrong. If you go this route, you might look at Nolo Press books and see if they have a traffic ticket book that covers your locale. While I can't vouch for books I haven't seen, I can tell you that their California book has a place on my bookshelf, and it's been good enough to get me pointed in the right direction on a lot of cases where traffic laws and procedure are an issue. You may find out, as I have through experience, that many police officers don't know the law quite as well as they think because they are (a) not well or properly trained on every single provision, even if it's common; and (b) they are not generally expected to get into the details of interpretation that a determined defendant (or attorney) is. Last, but not least, you can always talk to a lawyer, although actually hiring one might cost you more than the "repair" or the ticket would cost.
