I have a slight groaning noise (almost a very extremly week grind) at idle. It sounds like either the tach or the speedometer cables might need lubricating (it does seem to be in that area of the dash or behind it). Is this still needed on todays cars? Or actually 1999s? I know in the old days these cables needed lubricating.

Or do you think it is more likely to be something else. The noise is hard to describe, it doesn't really increase with increased speed or tach readings.
