now u should know that you should never buy any car audio equipment based on looks....

I'm not buying them purely based on looks, but I honestly can say that it is a part of my decision making process. That being said, what do you think of the decks I mentioned?

well, i like the functionallity of kenwoods, but i think their sq blows. the pioneer is an excellent deck. and i dont know anything about that alpine. but if its anything like the 9855, stay far far away from it.

Great, so I will look more in to the Pioneer deck. Thanks for your opinion.

Didn't say pioneer was crap. I said the same thing you did. It is not regarded as high end. I have gone from a top of the line Pioneer Premier to a middle of the row Eclipse and you can hear a difference. To be able to hear a difference just by switching head units means something tremendous happened. You can't say RF, Pioneer, or Alpine doesn't have a crap line....but could you point me in the direction of Eclipse's low end line? They haven't had one. Mark my words though....they will now.

nobody really runs anything hi end. pioneer isnt, alpine isnt, eclipse isnt. i love eclipse but theyre not that much better than pioneer decks. its a matter of preference. some people like a little more sq so theyll go for eclipse. some people like good sq but more flexability, so theyll choose pioneer. eclipses lower line is nuthing impressive at all. its easily comparible to some of pioneers mid-low line. just cause it had 5v preouts dont make it amazing. they still have a 1bit DAC like pioneers and weak EQs

you originally said something along the lines of pioneer only being good for TVs or something. so i was proving you wrong... thats all.

No actually I said I never had a problem with Pioneer and found it a good value for the money, however, it has never been regarded as a high end brand UNLESS you are talking about TVs. That sir, is what I said.

your right, i misread that one or got confused or something. but you do seem to think eclipse is "hi end" or something. but it isnt at all. its within the range or pioneer alpine, clarion etc. there are very few people who run true hi end decks. u just dont see it. eclipse has its his and its got its lows, just like all the other companies. its just a matter of preference

So what do you consider high end? You said Denon but that's worse than Eclipse IMO. What companies numbers stand out above Eclipse or Clarion for that matter?

well mcintosh for 1. Nakamichi. denon is considered hi end, despite the fact that you had bad experiences with their products. maybe you had denon RF units? cause theyre not the same. take a look at this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mint-Denon-DCT-Z1-24-bit-192-kHz_W0QQitemZ5870511304QQcategoryZ3293QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

nice numbersand quality build materials...

but its also not always JUST a company. take the DRZ-9255 by clarion for example. Thats a $1200 head unit. its considered hi end, but the rest of the line isnt. The Sony CDX-C90 also. ANd i think pretty much everything else Sony makes is a laughing stock. its all about the built and sq.

im not 100% but i think circuit city will only carry the lower end eclipse's such as the 1000 - 4000 series. i doubt they will carry the 5000, 7000, AVN6600 or AVN7000

Circuit City has a pretty solid line of eclipse products:

CD1000, CD2000, CD3000, CD4000, & CD5000

AVN7000, AVN5495, AVN5435

These headunits are in stock in all of the stores. Product is still arriving, but that is the head unit line up Circuit City sells

Hope this helps!!!

I'm kind of laughing at the whole "high-end" conversation. Pioneer makes one of the best sounding radios used in competition, the P9. This radio allows for digital intergration with Pioneer amplifiers and has a great DSP. Alpine,Eclipse, JVC, etc. make fantastic sounding head units. Wow...I put JVC into that list!!! A good friend of mine is a 3-time World Champion and uses JVC. It's a matter of how you use your headunit and not which one it is.

Keep in mind, soon we will not be able to put head units into cars. Vehicle manufactors are making it more and more difficult to integrate head units into vehicles. Truth to the matter, the days of selling head units are numbered. To that end, audio manufactors are making more intergration pieces to retain the factory head unit and still upgrade the audio systems.

To the original point of the post, find a headunit that fits your budget, need, and expansion ability. As most people progress into the sport of car audio, they find that they need upgradeability features. Find a headunit that fits your needs! Talk to the sales people, do some research, look at the radios, and most importantly, pick one that you like.

Good luck to ya!!!

I have been out of the car audio scene for a while. Back in 2002 I bought me the top of the line Alpine and thought that was the **** and was happy to know I got a 400 dollar head unit. Alpine was always the **** to me cause back in the day all porsche cars had them stock. Well that was before I got into audio and found out why they are awesome. I basically think know that all expensive head units have all the essentiall one needs to have a banging system. I even think sony is good for the money. I will still stick by Alpine though cause their distinguished look. That crystal thing and changing colors that gets me. It like all the companies got to the point where it can't get better so it will get cheaper. I was never a clarion fan for some reason I hated those gooseneck lol. Pioneer never caught my eye either back then but I am sure it has good stuff now. JVC got cool designs and sony too.

I agree integrating a system is getting harder though it would be pretty hard to stop tearing all that factory crap out and building your own like I just did. Now I did do it in a Blazer and not a Lexus or something with 12 or more speakers but it all seems do-able. It will probably limit the amount of people that are willing to do all of that to their car though.

there is definatly such a thing as hi end units, but i never said that in any way itll determine whether or not you can win comps. def just pick whatever you like best within your budget.

yeah, i know what your saying about these new stereos in cars. my mom just got an 06 lexus 400h and the stereo in that thingis not only enourmous, but it integrates sooo many of the vehicles other funtions into it, includeing climate control. i cant fathom any way possible to get an aftermarket unit in there, but i have faith that the engineers at all these companies will figure something out. car audio will never die.

Car audio will never die, but things will get real interesting when car manufactors switch to 48 volt systems.

what? when did they decide on this? thats gonna screw everything up. theyll end up losing so much money cause no1 would want to go through all the hassle of making such a drastic swith.
