So is it hard to become a volenteer firefighter? I want to be one, but my mom refuses to let me...

Being from around the same area as you I know how the companies out here run. Honestly, its pretty easy to become a firefighter, most departments only require you to complete Firefighter 1 within a year or 2. But they also require you to be an EMT (some don't but its rare). Like stated before, its somewhat difficult to be an EMT. Espically compaired to firefighting. Just pick up an application at you local firehouse or ask them to know for sure. As for you mom... thats all you, lol.

EMT's have one of the highest turnover rates of any profession. Seems to me like avg of 3-4 years or something. It's gotta be hard scraping up the leftovers every day, ya know.

I was a professional firefighter for 12 years, PLUS volunteered all during that time.  It is a thankless job and something you must have the desire and heart to do.  Firefighters along with EMT's have some of the highest divorce rates because of the demand and stresses put on you and your spouse.  I’ve seen so much stuff you kind of get immune to a lot of it.  The only time emotions really got going was when children were involved...seen them dead, dying and hurt..just have to go home, sit in the recliner and work it out.  I was at Pope AFB when an F-16 crashed into a C-141...men running around on fire, impaled on fence posts, walking around without a leg or arm...I never regretted doing it though and miss it.
