yes a yellow top will fit (you do know that is not a starter battery right?). The big 3 is EXTREMELY easy with that engine. Check out my install thread to see pics.

I use a yellow top in my 99 with no problems. This winter I threw a charger on it a couple of times, 'cause most of the time its just short trips to the train station, but I never had a problem starting up.

the red top is the optima that is designed to be the starter battery. Yellow tops are designed to be auxillary batteries. Might I ask why you want an optima? Just because of what you have heard or do you have any direct experience with them?

My optima yellow top lasted as a starter battery 10 years it just died this spring. Optima actually told me when I was buying a battery that the yellow top was recommended for me as a starting battery due to my stereo.

Bobditts, I don't know where you got your info from but your off base.

The red top is cranking only, yellow is a hybrid: cranking and deep cycle, the blue top is deep cycle (no cranking just aux).

I've had the same yellow top for about 6 years now in 3 diff trucks and its still cranking mine fine and running my lights and radio. In the past two my lights were all the warning lights for the vol fire department (reason why I went with a yellow top) and I know they made a good strain on it. Now I've jumped to LED warning flashers and lightened the load a bit.

For the stock alt, I think its 100 or 105 amps.

Im not saying the yellow CANT be used as a starter battery, but that isnt its intended design. The yellow top was designed to be a second battery used in conjunction with a starter battery. The blue top is for deep cycle purposes like you mentioned - constantly being fully drained before recharging. The yellow top can be charged constantly but can handle the deep drains at the same time.

Sounds like it's a great choice for a starter battery then

I just looked at their website, www.optimabatteries.com, and it looks like the Yellow Top is a fine choice for a starter battery:

Benefits and Applications:

Dual-purpose
  • Deep cycling and cranking power all packed into one battery.
Longer life
  • Lasts up to 2 times longer than traditional flat-plate batteries.
Higher reserve capacity
  • Constant performance quality, which keeps your battery running at the same level even as it's being discharged.
Optimal starting power
  • More power in the initial 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the starting process than comparably rated conventional lead-acid batteries.
Longer shelf-life (lower self-discharge)
  • Ideal for seasonal use, fully charged it can sit unused for up to 12 months at room temperature (or below) and still start a vehicle.
Vibration resistance
  • 15 times more resistant to vibration than traditional lead-acid batteries.
Leak-proof
  • Mountable in almost any position.

I used to work at a dealer, they are rated for cold cranking amps which means they are a cranking battery. They are a hybrid design combining cranking and deep cycle into one battery so the red tops normally have better CCAs and the blue tops have better run times but you can only get so much of one or the other and they have one of the better combo of the two on the market IMHO.
