Is it a practice facility, or a place to go and have fun?

Both. Most the time it is a place to go and have fun. The US Olympic teams all practice here sometimes during the year. It's a big event to come watch the pros practice. They also have 13 miles of Bike trails (which is what the dog and I walk through every week), bike rentals, Wall climbing, River kayaking, and beer. :D

Looks like a great facility, Is it private owned, or public?

Beautiful pictures...deffinately like the slow speed with the white water on the one pic....I wish we had one of those in Michigan...I'd have my canoe permanently strapped to my roof..going every day....ah well....I'll guess I'll have to stick to the regular rivers...those white water parks are cool as heck though!

ORIGINAL: Idriveachevy Looks like a great facility, Is it private owned, or public? Didn't know until I looked at the page ( http://www.usnwc.org/Organization.html ), but it seems to be a non-profit. I know they didn't make enough money in the first two years to efficiently run the park, so they have started charging parking this year ($35 a year) and having these night events on Thursday to get some buisness. I didn't mind having to pay since I have used this place free of charge for a couple of years now. Only fair to pay something. quote:
ORIGINAL: willjones I am definatly going to make the trip over there to hit this place up. It is like a dream come true for a person like me. You should, it is worth the ride up (but bring some money, it's not cheap to enter the water). There are plenty of cheap places to stay in the area that are nice. The rapids don't look large in the pics but they can adjust them to any class rapid and some areas stay class 4 and they adjust to class 5 sometimes of the day (what a guide told me, facts not guaranteed :D ). I have been dying to get some friends up to actually hit the rapids since I haven't been rafting in years, but so far no one is interested. I just stick to renting a kayak and hitting the river up until some friends pony up the money to hit the rapids with me. oh and here is a google earth of the place since I they recently updated the maps and actually showing it instead of a bunch of trees. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=mount+Holly,+NC&ie=UTF8&ll=35.271875,-81.007594&spn=0.004695,0.012188&t=h&z=17
