2dr 4x4 98    I live in an outside community of Nashville and as the gas prices near $4 its startin to hurt pretty bad. I'm thinkin of getting a cruiser or crotch rocket and just using my Blazer for the 3 or 4 months of winter/ recreation. Has anyone else put in any though into it?

I've though about it but I couldn't afford both the blazer's and a new bike's loan payments and insurance.

I thought about it when I bought it a couple of years ago. I knew that gas prices were going to sing, but I don't really drive that much every day, and I wanted 4x4 and a Hybrid is out of my affordability zone lol.

it's like the premium gas/regular gas argument.  It's not that much more expensive...so just deal with it...everyone else is.

I guess my problem is I dont make enough money and I got to drive a bunch and I like driving, but I dont want to sacrifice my self respect and drive a hybrid or anything of that nature. And with the whole insurance problem I would just cruise carefully without it on my blazer and get the much cheaper motorcycle insurance.

I'm still below my old fuel bill of $80-$90 a week so I'm not really cursing yet.

It hurts but still cheaper than replacing the truck for something else.
Nobody is going to want to buy my Blazer right now anyway so I may as well hold onto it for now..
In the meantime my wife can start work earlier than she usually does to drop me off on the way with her Toyota RAV4.

You have to much self respect to drive a hybrid, but not enough to keep you from driving a vehicle without insurance?  Yea, That's a dumb idea, don't do that.

Both the Z and the wifes car get better millage then the Blazer, but we still drive it most the time.  Usually I can go a week on one fill, so it sucks compared to previous times, but isn't killing me yet.  If it starts to hurt, I will try to sell it for whatever I still owe on it at the time and get something else.  I would love to sport a Mini Cooper S for my gas milage needs.

I commute for work, so I have no choice but to fill up. I try to drive less in town anyway, so since it's the summer, I plan to ride my bike more often and walk. It's healthier that driving to the grocery store, too.

I've said it before, but we don't have it rough at all.  $4/gallon gas is cheap compared with the rest of the world and considering the 'strength' of the US dollar, I'd consider that a pretty good price comparatively.  People should complain about the cost of bottled water!  Costs more to get bottled water than it does for a gallon of gasoline!

Anyway, for anyone considering trading in for an 'econo-box', please do your homework and look at the costs involved (all of them) and make an informed decision.  Way to many people are having a knee jerk reaction to the current price of gasoline and often make their situation much worse in the long run.  If you are making car payments, that makes the situation all that much more complicated.

Thought about selling the Blazer for $500-1K more than I owe on it and buying a cruiser or comparable 40-60mpg bike.  We are young, have no kids, and one car is enough for our long commutes.  Trouble is no one's buying, someone would have to take over payments (I think), and I'm still having issues with the rear end...

Was it bad350v8s10tahoe looking to give 10pin 6K for his truck?  LOL

EDIT: And I agree $4 is still better than $8 in Europe but something's gotta give.  I either need to make more money, spend less money, or lower my cost of living expenses.  Riding a motorcycle will allow me to keep more of the money I make now (since the job market is poo), I will spend less money overall since I'm making payments on the truck anyhow, and usually places with lower cost of living also have lower income earning potential.  My Wife and I are already carpooling as it is until my truck is driveable so sharing a vehicle when it rains or when I need to transport clients won't be a big deal.  When we have kids that might all change...

That's exactly how I feel about the situation.  Plus, my Blazer is PAID FOR.  The best way for me to get value out of it is by continuing to drive it as long as possible, because nobody's going to give me what it's worth in sale OR trade.

However, I do plan to get a second car in the next few months, so that I can occasionally park the Blazer, and so that I can do the major upgrades I have planned.  It will probably be another used Maxima, since I loved the last one so much.

Besides, I promised my wife I'd get her a house first.  It's a bad time to sell a truck, but a great time to buy real estate.  LOL

That makes sense, but if your state's laws are the same as in MD, no insurance means no tags, and no tags means you're not allowed to park it outside. You'd have to keep it in the garage.

It would be nice to still have the truck road-legal, in case the bike gets trashed or the weather's too bad to ride.  Just a thought.
