could the ignition control module be the reason my blazer wont stay started. died the other day and wouldnt start back up. once it did it idled fine but would back fire when reved. now it will start but then hesitates really bad and eventually dies. fuel pump does click on and there seems to be plenty of pressure. any ideas would be of great help. thanks

so from trying to start blazer the battery ran too low to turn over. i charged it and the next day when i put it back in its like my blazer never had a problem. can someone please please please tell me what might have been the problem and if it truly isnt a problem any more. im afraid to drive it especially if it stalls again.

Have the battery and alternator tested, check the plug wire connections, test the fuel pressure, install a new fuel filter, see how it does.

fuel filter is fine. fuel pump and fuel pressure are good. problem is that for some unknown reason it will die without warning. it will turn over right away after dieing but wont restart. after it dies it will (after a little bit of time) restart and drive again but also dies again. it is now once again towed into the driveway where it sits and acts like there is nothing wrong with it besides small little back fires from reving it up. i dont have a code scanner and the auto parts store does not rent them out to anyone. they dont even have the equipment to test my ignition control module although 30 others they can test but not mine. i need some serious help PLEASE!!!

You cannot assume that the fuel pressure is good.  Have you put a gauge on it?  On a few vehicles, I actually had to drive around with my gauge attached to the fuel rail to monitor the pressure while driving so I could see what happened to the pressure when the problem occurred.  With my new scan tool, that is a thing of the past (real time monitoring FTW)!

But yeah, unless you have verified the pressure, with a gauge, you really do not know if it is proper or not.  A poor connection to the pump could cause intermittent stalling.

Then there is the ignition switch that could be the culprit...  Do you ever notice the security light on your dash illuminating before or at the time of the stall?

i dont have a fuel pressure gauge. i just assumed the pressure was fine being that it starts right up and will stay that way and even for what driving you could get out of it before it dies. and when it dies you could wiggle wires and bump the gas tank all you want it wont restart until the car cools down a bit.  people say the blazer wont even start if it doesnt have enough pressure so i figured it did. looking to buy a scan tool anyways so i might have to look into that live monitoring.

i have not been in it when it dies. G/F drives it while im at work with my other car. she says she never noticed the security light come on or do anything wierd at all each time it has died. and each time it has been mid day when its the warmest out and the blazer has to cool down somewhat before it starts up again but if you drive it again after that shortly after it dies again.

something diffrent i have noticed ever since it died the first time is a little backfire when it is reved up. not sure why its doing that but it still idles fine.

would a scan tool tell me if its the ignition switch?? on vacation this coming week and need the blazer back up and running so g/f can drive it to work. hope you can help. thanks

Chech the connection to the battery. This sort of thing happened to my blazer and I just installed new cables and never had a problem sense. If you don''t want to buy he new cables right away can try cleaning the contacts and using a copper or silver washer (which they do have) to create a better contact. hope this helps

your blazer would stall and it was because of battery cables?? when i took my battery out to charge it back up there was a lot of corrosion on positive cable. i cleaned it up pretty good or so i think and it still stalled.

I have very similar issues with my Blazer... Unfortunately, there is no easy way to diagnose every possibility with certainty. I have just changed the ICM and mine still stalled out after 15 miles of driving.  My next planned change will be the ignition switch located in the steering column.  My local auto store wants $120.00 for an AC Delco switch.. RockAuto wants $98.00 + $10.00 shipping for the same.... I need to remove the switch from the column to know if  it''s a 4 pin or 3 pin connector before I can order the part.

It is very possible, but they typically trigger a code.

Hhmmm, wonder if the ignition coil might be dying?

Can the crankshaft position sensor the camshaft position sensor and the ignition switch be bench tested like you can do with the Ignition Control Module?

i believe my repair book mentions a way that you can test it. what it does not mention though is the relearn procedure other people have talked about having to do once replacing the crankshaft sensor. i would think if it was a must it would mention that in the replacing procedure.

ok well after many hours of trying to find people with similar problems and trying to diagnose what was wrong with vehicle without buying one part after another it turned out to be a failing coil pack. so supposedly when it gets hot it can stop working and not create enough or no spark at all causing a stall. once it cools down it works again. so far blazer drives fine. have not driven too far with it yet but no problems and no codes after it finished going through its necessary cycles. so for now its fixed but if it stalls again i will let everyone know. thanks for everyones input  :-)

Dang, glad that was what it was, because it was the last idea I had to offer. Hope that cures the problem. Think I''ll get myself a beer. .
