i was just wondering how is it that a 4300 in a blazer has 190hp but a new replacement that i saw only has 150hp? or that a 3800 in my moms dodge van has 200hp but the 3800 in my friends fire bird has 235hp or a like all the chevy 3800. thay are differant. and is it just me or is the 3800cc engine is one of the most used car, van, suv, truck engine by all the auto makers?

Look at the torque the engine produces. Without forced induction, you won''t have torque down low and high horsepower out of an old engine design such as the 4.3L v6. While other comparable engines may have higher HP numbers, they also do not have a lot of torque down low in the RPM range like the 4.3L does. Replacement engines, if they are the same, will carry the same HP rating as the engine it is replacing, but due to the variety of applications that a replacement short block or long block can be used in, often the lowest HP rated application is used to quote the HP of the replacement.
