im looking to make a custom sub box.  I dont know anything about boxes so if someone could kelp me out it would be great.  I plan on making an U-shaped box that goes around the the back of my blazer to save some space.  I plan on mounting my amp along the back seats which would be the bottom of the U. The along the sides would be the 2 subs angled up.  Kinda confusing with out a pic.  Basicaly what i need to know is the differense between ported and sealed.  I also dont have a clue about size and frequency and what size port if i need one.  if anyone could answer any of my questions im sure it will help me out alot.

well i think i can help you out.. u defenatly want a ported box. they move more air and its more efficent for the wooffer''s. most daily drivers are tuned to around 35-40 hz or they should be. in my opinion. the port size is how u tune the box to get the 35-40 hz by changing the internal volume of the box. you will want the woofers fireing upwards with the port twards the back hatch. the woofers u have will determin the cubic foot the box needs then the tuning from the port to get the hz were they need to be. if u have any more q''s just let me know

yea they will recomend a sealed because u can put more power to them in a seald box. but i still think a ported box will be better. sealed boxxes aer ok if your listening to rock, and anything that needs tight bass. it would probly be ok in a sealed box. i dont know how much time or money u want to invest in it. if your not good with a saw build a sealed box.:P

then just stick with the factory specs for a sealed box it should still sound good. make sure to make a devider in the box to seperate the woofers from one another. and with it being sealed it dosent matter how the wooffers are faced al tho facing twards the back hatch would probly be the best

A lot of people use MDF, its sturdy, but idk a about making it Ushaped...youll probably have to have some of the inside box not actually used as sub airspace...idk how youd cover rounded corneres with that stuff...

You can "bend" mdf with a little bit of time and skill and creativity.
Take your table saw set the blade depth so you don''t cut right through the mdf now make cuts about every 1/2-3/4 of an inch use a scrap piece to practice trial and error for best results you should have an end result like this

and you can see how it bends
now when I do this I bend it over the other way and fill in the grooves with kitty hair to give it strength and sand until it is smoothed out.

I think 3/4" MDF is the most recommended. I used 5/8" Particle Board because I was a n00b and it has held up just fine. Mine is sealed...

ok im thinking about changing my plan a bit.  This is my current plan
a sub on each side and the amp mounter along the back seats under plexi.  Last night i thought about putting in a tv.  It would go in the area between the subs.  A 19" would fit perfectly. It would fold up out of the floor.  I would have a/v connections for a xbox or what ever and i would have a dvd player.  The worst part is all the money involved in this. Since i only make 250 a week and will be going to college in the fall so i will be making aroun 150 a week.  So it would take a long time to complete.  Tell me what you guys think. Is it a good idea or is it just one of those stupid ideas you think of late at night.  I would also have to be able to remove the tv for when i want to go hit the trails.

download WINISD or Bassboxpro and punch in your subs T/S parameters. The program will determine which enclosure is best for your sub. Not all subs are made to be in a sealed or ported enclosure. Some subs are one or the other.

As far as making a U shape with MDF, you want to use a method called kerfing. Do a google search. I know the home depot website has a great tutorial on kerfing.

its not a stupid idea. just dont get to extravageant in the design to were it will be to difficult to complete. keep it simple. especially if its yout first install. it looks easy on paper.
the design u cam up with looks good and will work awsome with the sealed boxes. plexi is expensive so beware. 3/4 mdf is the best to use unless your reallly good with fiberglass.and bondo/painting.

yea i have never glassed before so i decided that this shouldnt be a good thing to start with.  I am also good with woodworking and have access to all the tools i need so it shouldnt be a problem to build it, but it will take alot of time and money.  I will probably end up saving money this summer and make it a winter project which means the blazer will have to park outside.

I just wanted to add too that with sealed boxes you generally have to push more power into the subs in order to overcome the vacuum that''s created inside the box, that is, if you wanna get the best bass/sound out of ''em, vented boxes are a better bet, don''t go ported there''s too much chance for error and you can get turbulence @ the port .

Kerf cuts are easy but time consuming and you want to be very very gentle with the piece you just did when moving it from the saw to the work space.
Here is a pic of a box i did for a blazer using kerfs.
