I''m not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, but my Aunt has a 2006 Chevy Malibu that has the following problems:

1) The brake lights seem to be working reverse of what they should.  In other words, the brake lights are on while driving down the road and go off when the brake pedal is applied.

2) The car is very hard to shift out of park.  You have to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor and even then the shifter is very hard to move out of the park position.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with her car???

Thanks in advance for any advice.

2006 means it is likely still under warranty...  If it is, take it in for service and let the dealership worry about it.

As far as the problem, it sounds like the brake switch is faulty which will affect both things.  Does it shift out of park without pressing on the brakes at all?  I would not drive it with the brake lights malfunctioning.

It is still under warranty, but the reason that my Aunt asked me to post her problem on here is because it has been to the dealership four times so far, and they can''t figure out what is wrong with the car or how to fix it.  I do know that the brake switch was the first thing that they changed, but I don''t know what else was done to the car so far.

Tell the dealership to get her a new car.  Not sure if you have any lemon laws in your state, but NY Lemon Law states that if a vehicle returns more than three times for the same repair, the manufacturer is required to replace said vehicle.  If they let her leave with the problem still present, well...  I will just say that it is very, VERY irresponsible of them.

To me, this condition would indicate that voltage is flowing backwards through the system like wires are crossed at some point.  Anything that I have read online points to an improperly adjusted brake light switch.

If it were my car, I would demand a equal or greater sized rental vehicle and tell them to keep the car until it were fixed.

She lives in PA.  I''m not sure what the law says there.  I''m guessing that it''s similar to NY.
