shift motor located on my 2001 Blazer LS.

My dash switch has AWD, 2WD, 4WDH and 4WDL and...... the buttons just blink at me when I push them to switch out of
2WD. I found the vacume actuator under the battery (seems ok) unhooked the cable (both ends) and it seems free.... and removed the plastic black cover (three 16mm bolts) the acuator cable runs through into what looks like a differential between the front two axels.

I thought the black plastic piece I removed was the motor but...... not.

Help me out please.... where is it and how may I recognize it to remove and replace it?

it is on the driver side of the car and half way down the body. and thats the extent of my knowledge

Thanks noom.

Anybody get me a little closer to the transfer case shift motor than that?

This 2001 Blazer is an automatic.

Can this shift motor be seen without removing something first?

Is it on the transmission body itself?

If it''s on the transfer case.... how do I recognize the transfer case itself?

The key is "transfer case" shift motor. It is on the transfer case between the transfer case body and the front drive shaft.

The transfer case is what is behind the transmission support cross member.

Here is a picture of the transfer case removed:

The front drive shaft output is the shaft to the right and the encoder motor is just to the left of that, bolted to the side of the transfer case.

I would remove the passenger side kick panel first and check the electrical connections on the TCCM.

Use to do auto trans work years ago but.... never looked at a 4wheel so.... I''''m still a bit fuzzy on the shift motor location,

May I ask some more questions later if I still have trouble?

PS: I sure can hear that motor (I think) clickin'''' away when I hit them dash buttons and..... the unit will go into 4 low and stay even with the buttons a-blinkin''''. Then..... when I hit 2w..... the trans does shift back ok.

Does that change the diagnosos at all?

Hmmmmmmm....... PPS:

I expanded Kyles pic of the "Transfer Case".

Is that black piece bolted to the outside of the case (between the case and "output shaft" the shift motor?....

or will I need to take the plate the black piece is bolted to off to get at the shift motor?

Also..... is the "transfer case" in that pic sitting upside down??

Seems'''' I recall that output shaft over on the driver side. The pic has it on the passenger side.

Whoa.... found the sucka'' (Transfer Case Shift motor).

Sooo.... that''s a transfer case.... sits backward from what I thought it should..... no wonder I thought the pic Kyle posted showed it upside down (foolish me.... even kin'' see the cross member mount on the bottom in the pic).

I also found a site (blog) I think is yours Kyle. Nice thread on 4 wheelers.... read it all.

TCCM connections look brand new but.... the mounting plate the TCCM sits on was very rusted..... prolly'' was not allowing the module to properly ground.... so R & R and cleaned it.

I will prolly'' try and remove the front drive shaft b4 attacking the 6pin shift motor.

What do you folks think?

So you have found it. Good! I am not sure if you need to remove the front driveshaft to get to the encoder motor, but it will only give you more access and is not too difficult to get out of there.

The encoder motor is the whole unit (metal and black plastic connector) that is on the side of the transfer case.

You really should try some other diagnostic steps before just replacing the encoder motor, but sometimes the need for a high feature scan tool may make it easier and more cost effective to replace the encoder motor... It is quite expensive.

I''m baaaack :-) hopefully for the last time on this project.

I now have the Transfer Case Shift Motor out and hanging by it''s electrical connection at the top of the auto trans.

Car is a 2001 Blazer LS Auto 4 wheel.

How do I unhook this electrical connection, please???

These connections have been the bane of me since they started appearing in the 70''s.

The connector may have an external catch on it somewhere and may very well have a locking tab through the catch to keep it from coming loose. It may alternatively have a bolt in the middle of the connector which must be loosened to disconnect the connector.
