Hope someone can help.  I bought a 94 S10 Blazer with a 6cyl CPI motor for my son a couple of days ago.  Took it for a test drive and the motor sounds great and trans shifts perfect.  The next day my son picked it up and drove it for about 7 miles and it ran perfect.  It only had a quarter tank of gas so he stopped and filled it up.  He then drove about another mile and parked the truck for a couple of hours.  He then got in to go to the store and got about a mile from the house when it died.  When I got there I stepped on the gas a few times while cranking and it started but sounded like crap then died.  We wound up driving it with two feet for a little while then it was fine again.  Once again parked it for about 1/2 hour then went to drive it and it wouldn''t stay running.  Next day replaced the MAP and TPS and went to take it to the mechanic and it started right up but idled rough, drove about 1/4 mile and it stalled again.  Any clue to what the problem may be.  I have a feeling it may be the EGR valve but the mechanic says it is hard to get to.  Anyone know the location of the EGR valve ?

If the truck is the 4.3 Vortec with the plastic cover on the top of the engine it should be on the front of the engine near the Thermostat housing, not hard to get at.

That is what I thought.  I took it to a mechanic and he tried to tell me that they really dont like to try and clean the EGR valve because it is hard to get to and might break but I have done this before in a 95 blazer and it wasnt that hard.  He tried to tell me it was in the back of the motor.  I only took it to the mechanic because it was throwing a code and needed a fuel filter and with my back I just could''t do it.

Do you think the EGR might be my problem.

Yep, most definitely could be the EGR.

Before you pull yours, go get the screened gasket - makes it so you don''t really need to do it again. When you do pull it, clean it gently, paying particular attention to the area where the pintle seats to make sure it fully closes.

You''ll need a 10mm socket and at least 9" extension to get to the right-hand bolt and either a wobble socket or a 10mm wrench to get to the left-hand bolt.

Ok,  I have cleaned the EGR which was bad, the fuel filter which was filled with dirt, the map sensor, the tps sensor.  What else could be makine it run this way.  How could it go from running perfect to running like crap after adding gas.  On my way to change the fuel pump.  After that what is left.

Before you replace the fuel pump, have you tested it? I ask because it''s a lot of money to spend on a guess.

It might possibly be the fuel pressure regulator and/or ''''nut kit'''' (fuel pressure and return lines), both of which are located under the upper intake plenum. Even better, you don''t have to pull the plenum to check, just the Vortec cover and the IMTV (round thing) underneath.

EDIT: more on that here http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/feb2000/techtotech.htm

The mechanic checked at the fuel pressure is at 48 PSI with key on and engine off.  Pressue is 54 PSI with truck running.  Does anyone think that it may be the fuel pump ?

WOW WOW WOW Dont waist your money, if the fuel pump works dont bother buying a new one. I just bought a 95 thats been sitting in the garage for 4 years and i have the exact same problem. Yesterday it ran fin and today i was driving with 2 feet again lol. Check under the hood if all your vaccum hoses are connected and not leaking. Change your oil and oil filter. Clean the pcv valve. You can take it to a auto store like advance auto and borrow a code reader. I''ll go buy me a new egr valve tomorrow lol good luck

I needed a new fuel pump anyway.  The float wasn''t working so no gas reading.  I just hope this time it comes off the lift it runs better.  I asked about water in the gas.  Truck did sit awhile.

Just out of curiousity, How much does a fuel regulator go for.  I have checked at the auto parts store and they say a few hundred dollars.  Then I go on the computer and can fine one for my year truck for 35.00 new.  Whats up with that.

I got a Help!/Dorman FPR from AutoZone for something around $40, if that helps.

So you dont need to replace the whole unit you can just replace the regulator.  That was the difference I saw.  Mechanic wants to charge around 500 dollars for this.

Check out Lindertech.com.  They have a FPR upgrade kit that allows you to install the 96+ SCFI FPR into the older CPI spider body.  To do this, you have to remove the spider.  As a result, you should also replace the internal fuel lines.

The job is not all that difficult to perform and Lindertech has a complete kit with a reconditioned injection spider for $300 including the internal fuel lines, upgraded FPR, and all necessary gaskets/o-rings.

I bought and installed a new egr valve today and that did the trick for my truck. I got the egr valve for 102 bucks at pep boys, and put it in myself the bolt on the left side was a bit tricky other then thats, the easiest egr valve i ever exchanged. Now my truck wont stall anymore, but it still shaking at a red light, WHATS UP WITH THAT?

Ok new update.  I did not replace the fuel pump yet.  The mechanic was finally able to get codes out of it.  One was for the EGR so he took it out and cleaned it and the second was for multiple missfire.  He checked further and found the number 5 cylinder was not firing.  Explanes why the truck was shaking when we last started it so he replaced the plugs and wires.  Truck fired right up, he had it idleing for about a half an hour and then let my son take it for a drive.  My son drove it for about 15 min and once the truck got warm it stalled out again.  Sat for about 10 min and I had to pump the gas a few times then it started.  Hooked it up to a fuel pressure guage again and it was 58 with key on and 52 with the engine running at 2500 rpm.  The pressure did not leak off at all.  Still not sure what to try next.

Ok Everyone.  I want to thank all of you for your help.  The truck is now running and sounds good.  It turned out it was the regulator.

With a CPI engine, the term "regulator" is most commonly short for fuel pressure regulator or FPR as it has been referred to here.  Installs have been covered numerous times as has costs involved.

Sorry it took so long to reply.  Was on a cruise to Bahamas.  Well one week has passed and truck is still running fine.

It was the fuel regulator that is attached to the spider.  Part only cost 40 dollars.  Until someone on here gave me advise I thought you had to replace the whole spider but you can just replace the regulator if you see no leaks.  Turns out that was my whole problem.  To bad it took spending 450 to find this out.
